In Australia, are Game Stores required to check your ID if you buy a R18+ game?

On Tuesday, I bought a R18+ video game for my Playstation 3 (The Last of Us), but they never checked my identification. I didn’t think of it at the time, but are they required to check my identification? I have had my identification checked when buying alcohol before.

I believe they are required to but I’m not sure. Aren’t most games you guys get in AU pretty censored as is? I know they required to check for sure here in the states(though they rarely actually do check) and Australia is a lot stricter with games it seems. I know Saints Row 4 was just banned in Australia.
State of Decay was also banned just recently.
I was under the impression that the same laws that apply to alcohol applied to R18+ games and movies. That if i appear under 30, i had to be carded?
depends who’s behind the counter. sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. @bomyne you can buy state of decay on ebay, I have bought the banned games from the us and they work fine.

I just wanted to post a follow up to this. I was in EB Games the other day, paying off my copy of Pokemon X when i heard the girl behind the counter talking about this to another customer. During the GTA 5 launch event, she had accidentally sold a copy of the game (It’s R18+) to a minor. She was fined, and nearly lost her job because she forgot to check identification.
