Is my coffee consumption becoming out of control?

Asked by Drush545 (229points) June 27th, 2013

On any given day I will usually drink anywhere from 6–8 cups of strong black coffee. Today I only had 4 cups in a row and it did not even get me going for the day. I am starting to feel like my caffeine addiction is reaching new heights. I wish there was some way to reset my caffeine tolerance but so far all attempts have proved futile.

If four cups of caffeinated coffee does not jump start you, maybe you need intervention. That’s a serious amount of caffeine in your system. Is there a Caffeine Anonymous?

Perhaps cut down to only 6 cups daily and learn to live with it for a few weeks. If you are then capable of still staggering around without falling asleep on your feet, cut back to 5 or at least dilute them with a little decaff.

Jeez. The newly released DSM-5 considers you a legitimate addict.

Help is on the way

Here is some info from the Mayo Clinic about coffee consumption and what you can do to help yourself cut back. According to their info, you are drinking too much.

6–8 cups a day?! Wow, I can barely choke down one cup of that crap. And you drink it black? Blech! You’re a warrior.

You should definitely cut back if you can’t get through the day with “only” 4 cups. That’s a serious caffeine dependency.

Yes, it’s too much. Get some advice how to lower it gradually. You can also experiment with black and green tea, because the effect of caffeine does last longer.

Sounds like a lot to me.

If you can cut back to 4 without suffering a headache, start there. Caffeine, more than anything, helps fight feeling tired or sleepy, especially for people who are addicted. Less caffeine than usual and you are likely to feel like you are dragging, but eventually you will adjust. The best way to rid yourself of needing caffeine is to stop using it. Don’t stop cold turkey if you try it. Cut back a litle at a time over a week. Especially when you reduce to zero get ready for headaches and wanting to lie down and go to sleep for a few days.

Are you only drinking the coffee in the morning all at once?

Cut back, and also consider how healthy your diet is in general and how much sleep you get.
