In the case of the lawsuit against PD restaurants, why doesn't anyone mention the alleged discrimination against women?

Asked by food (792points) June 27th, 2013

If you read the legal papers about the case, most of the issues are about discrimination against women, but no one mentions it…plus allegedly the worst offender is one of PD’s relatives, and no one mentions him either… I just wonder why. Maybe it’s because no one read the legal papers, and everyone’s commenting without having too much information? Before I was informed, I thought it seemed strange that someone was suing her for a comment or two. After seeing the legal documents available online, if what they say are true, and if the uploaded version is real, one might believe the company could have settled if only to answer for what her relative allegedly did—there are dozens of horrible accusations listed. Of course, I don’t know for sure that they are true… Nonetheless, at least it doesn’t sound at all like a petty lawsuit per se if even a quarter of the allegations are true.

What are PD restaurants?

I think probably Paula Deen Restaurants.

Yes, that’s it

I guess I think she should get better PR and employment advice, before taking any further steps or for heaven sakes before appearing on TV or on a video again…

After looking at the case, it seems like a situation where the person suing allegedly hit her head against a glass ceiling again and again, among other awful things…so I don’t understand why no one even mentions that…

@food No one mentions it because they want to be outraged on Deen’s behalf. They pretend it’s all about one use of a word decades ago when (a) she’s admitted to using it more than once, and (b) there are other issues (e.g., the sex discrimination you mention). It’s just part of people’s desire to boil down every issue to some simple sound bite instead of dealing with the messy details of reality.

But even respectable reporters who weren´t being soft on her stuck to only one topic, “the sound bite”. After reading the documents, by no means do I think that what´s being discussed on the media is the most important point. They don´t need to refer to the past, or even PD herself, or just a couple of words. They could just stick to current employment factors in the restaurants and there would be plenty of discussion. That´s just my opinion.

Maybe they don´t think everyone wants to hear about the details, or maybe they don´t want to influence the lawsuit…

@food Well that is an optimistic supposition. unfortunately this is sound bite not the real issues is very commen these days.

I used to be a fan of Hunter S thompson and the advent of gonzoism but to call the reporting even on level of gonzoism is a stretch. : (

@food Reporters have editors, and editors have a strong interest in sticking to the sound bite. Also, there are very few respectable reporters these days. I can’t barely think of one that isn’t also a comedian.

After searching for a long time, I finally did find two online articles that addressed the topics I mentioned at least a little bit. And that’s about it…. One of them talked about the employment issues that concerned them, and the other spoke about the lack of risk management on behalf of the company and lawyers.

food's avatar

Well, if we think about it, even I am speaking anonymously and didn’t even want to write the person’s name. I guess I’m not interested in “throwing a stone”, I’m just surprised that they didn’t get better counsel on the one hand, and on the other hand, that most people (except for two articles) didn’t identify the crux of the issue.

I’ll have to look up the term gonzoism because I’m not familiar with it

This whole Paula Deen thing is a made-up controversy.

I love how people pretend to be outraged.

Now that you have destroyed this woman, tell me how the world has become a better place.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@elbanditoroso All of the outrage I’ve seen has been on behalf of Paula Deen, such as yours just now. It’s the lawsuit over her habitual racism and sexism that “destroyed” her, if you can call losing a television show and a few branding deals while keeping one’s fortune and primary business “being destroyed.” Deen will be just fine, even if she does not manage to rise from the ashes in a year or two.

As for how the world has been made a better place, every stand we take against prejudice is a step towards eliminating it. Perhaps it is a small step, and perhaps the journey will never be complete. But that’s no reason not to get closer and closer. And on a more immediately practical note, consider how many people will be saved from heart attacks and diabetes in the absence of Deen’s television show. ~

@SavoirFaire – sorry, I just don’t buy the “lets assassinate this woman’s character to make the world an incrementally better world” as a strategy.

This Deen thing is mob rule by a group looking for a target.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@elbanditoroso Again, the only character assassination I’ve seen anywhere has been performed on behalf of Paula Deen. Can you not even see that the only person engaging in the sort of strategy you’re railing against here is you? Deen’s restaurant has been packed with customers every day since this became news. Commenters who think she did the wrong thing have been very careful and nuanced in their analyses. I’ve seen more invective hurled at Deen over her heart attack and diabetes-inducing recipes than I have over her racism and sexism. So while I’m sure some crazy person somewhere on the internet has worked out an elaborate proof that she’s the antichrist, so far you are the most outraged person I’ve encountered on this issue.
