Were you ever cussed out on your job?

Asked by Eggie (5926points) June 28th, 2013

A very humiliating experience, and it has happened to me numerous times, just the other day in fact by a co-worker that is much younger than me and is a woman. If you were ever cussed out, what did you do? How did you react to it? What are your ways of dealing with the humiliation? And also does it happen at the Fluther office?

”...it has happened to me numerous times…”

Step 1 – Pocket recorder.

Step 2 – Private meeting with verbal assailant.

Step 3 – Shakedown to ensure assailant does not have a pocket recorder.

Step 4 – Agree upon a reasonable extortion fee, to prevent you from taking recording to superiors.

Step 5 – Bank deposit.

^^^You get up to two years in jail for recording someone without consent and thousands in fines.

What does cussed out mean?

Gabby101's avatar

@exnick – I don’t believe it’s that simple.

Yes, I have been cussed out, yelled out or corrected in front of other people. I usually interrupt the person and tell them I would prefer to have the conversation in private. If they keep going, I let them finish and then tell them I will schedule time to discuss the situation later. Of course, underneath it all, I am seething!

A good company doesn’t put up with this type of thing.

@exnick “You get up to two years in jail for recording someone without consent and thousands in fines”

The law has changed in recent years, and greatly depends upon the state. Federal law, for instance, now allows recording others without their knowledge. At least one person in the conversation must be aware of the recording.

A majority of the states and territories have adopted wiretapping statutes based on the federal law, although most also have extended the law to cover in-person conversations. Thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia permit individuals to record conversations to which they are a party without informing the other parties that they are doing so. These laws are referred to as “one-party consent” statutes, and as long as you are a party to the conversation, it is legal for you to record it.

Regardless, my sarcasm tempts more the crime of extortion, rather than wiretapping.

Once, many years ago, for something that wasn’t my fault.

Just before lunch time, my boss (a regional director) was getting reamed out on the phone by his boss (vice president of the company). It was about something I’d brought to his attention numerous times, but he had never bothered to correct the problem. Once his boss got on his case about it, he tried to say he’d had no clue it was going on. To ‘prove’ his point and save face, he called me in to his office (while the vp was still on the line, listening to our exchange) and proceeded to scream and cuss at me (why didn’t you tell me about this problem, god damnit?!?) He wouldn’t let me get in a word edgewise.

I was completely shocked, wanted to cry but didn’t right then. I stalked out, got my purse and left the building. Apparently, he assumed I’d gone to lunch, but I actually went home – with no intention of returning. When I hadn’t come back after lunch time, he called me at home to see what was up. I told him that after he’d thrown me under the bus like that and treated me so horribly, I wasn’t coming back in. He made the situation worse, saying things like “Oh, don’t be a baby about this. We’re all adults here. Get over it.” I told him that he was the one acting like a child, but assured him that I would, in fact, get over it. “But not today.”

I went back to work the next day, and he apologized. Prior to this occurrence, my boss and I got along great and I considered him a personal friend. While we continued to work well together, things were never the same afterward.

Why are you getting cussed out so often? I’ve been working for over 30 years, and that was the only time it ever happened.

@dxs cussed out means cursed at. having someone call you names, insult your mother and your ancestry, tell you that you can kiss various unappealing parts of their anatomy, that kind of thing.

rojo's avatar

Yes I have, by subcontractors. I do not respond well to it. I generally explode right back. I know most of the words and how to use them appropriately.

I have never had a co-worker, client or boss do it to me however. I would probably respond the same way.

When I say numerous times, I mean I have had more than one experience because of the places I worked. I have worked on construction sites and recently now I am working at a restaurant. It was just this girl at work that saw me sitting down in the back and told me that I had no right sitting there and I thought that she was out of place to tell me that…its not like she is the boss or anything…and I asked her if she wanted to send me home…and she replied that I was being an asshole….smh. She is always on my case at one point or the other and she has a really insulting way of talking to people so I got tired of it and I took a shot at her..smh. Its a longer story than this but I just wanted to see if I was the only one who was having that experience.

Eggie's avatar

@augustlan Did it happen at Fluther or has it ever happened at Fluther?

rojo's avatar

Construction site are dangerous places to get into a pissin’ match. There are all kinds of hard, hand sized objects that can come into play. Not saying don’t do it, just saying be aware of your surroundings. And, don’t expect help from others on the site, they are just happy for the diversion to the usual monotony.

@rojo I haven’t gotten into any fights but I have been cussed at on occasion there, well other workers as well….sometimes I could be really clumsy or if I am in a bad mood I can say some pretty nasty things myself. But in this particular instance I just wanted to let that girl know that I wasnt taking any orders from her.

syz's avatar

I get cussed out by clients semi-regularly.

I’ve been in the military for 8 years, so yes.

@Eggie Never at Fluther. At least not to me.

@augustlan “Never at Fluther”

I distinctly recall being banned on at least one occasion for telling a mod to FO. I distinctly recall crawling to you on hand and knee, licking the gravel with my dry tongue, begging forgiveness and pleading grace… after mandatory sentence served.

Sometimes by students who don’t like their mark or that I won’t give them an extension.

Eggie's avatar

@Bellatrix really? I guess you suspend them after right?

augustlan's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Oh, yeah. I wasn’t thinking about being cussed out by members. That actually happens quite a bit!

Bellatrix's avatar

No @Eggie. People get frustrated and lash out and especially when they don’t get what they want. If it was a consistent pattern I might take some action. Mostly I’d just remind them they are expected to be polite even when frustrated. I don’t let stuff like that get to me.

I work as a fundraiser for a gay rights group, so I’m cursed out on an almost daily basis.

and cry pretty much every time :|
