For us older folks: Do you fight taking naps or just go ahead and nod off?

Asked by Sunny2 (18852points) June 29th, 2013

Admit it. Now and then you fall asleep when you didn’t intend to. How do you react?

First, off, define ‘old’, lol! If I’m tired, I will lie down and take a short nap; 15–30 minutes will refresh me. And I’ve been doing it for years, when circumstances allow.

I have believed in the “long sleep, short sleep’ theory of life for decades and have an afternoon nap as often as I can.

As I age, I rarely fall asleep before 1:00 AM so it all works out well.

This way, instead of drooping my way through the late afternoon brown-out, where I am incapable of doing much of anything, I have a snooze, a second wind and then a terrific part two of the day.

Only older people nap? Who’da thunk it.

Personally, naps make me feel like shit.

@ccrow Old-er. It’s partly a state of mind and partly personal physical reality. You is what you is.
I raised the question because my husband swears he never naps. Next thing I know he’s nodded off, but still insists he does NOT nap. so be it.

When I was younger I disliked taking naps. I would wake up groggy and disoriented, and I’d have a hard time getting to sleep that night. But nowadays, I love to taking short naps when the mood strikes, primarily on weekends.

Of course now that I’m older, I have a better sense of how fast time is moving and how much of it is devoured by sleep. The dB’s have a song for it: That Time Is Gone.

@Sunny2 Just how old is “older”? :-)

I <3 naps. However, I have to work, so I can’t nap on weekdays, and I am often too busy for that luxury on weekends.

I fall asleep watching TV in the afternoon at weekends on occasions and I love it. If you’re tired, I think you should be able to take a nap. No matter what your age. Power naps are supposed to be good for you.

@SadieMartinPaul It’s NOT a number. Check the answer two places back.

Naps kick ass.

A quick power nap when you are tired is amazing and good for you. The key word is “quick” like 15 to 20 minutes. As I get older, I appreciate them more.
