Does anyone know a solution to this issue with Gmail?

Asked by glacial (12150points) June 29th, 2013

I have a PC laptop, and am using Internet Explorer 9 (Please do not castigate me for this choice. It is the browser I like). For about a week now, I have been experiencing an odd problem with gmail.

When I click on “Sent mail” or “Drafts”, instead of opening either of these selections, I am taken to whatever happens to be open in the last browser window that I used. This doesn’t happen all the time, but maybe about half the time. When it does, I have to return to the gmail window, and try hitting “Drafts” again… sometimes more than once. Annoying.

So, for example, if I have open gmail, Fluther, and Facebook, when I click “Drafts”, instead of seeing my drafts, I see Fluther.

It has definitely never sent me to anything other than a browser window. I just tried it now being logged into gmail on Firefox, and it didn’t happen (which doesn’t tell me much, since it’s not a consistent glitch), but this time when I tried to click “Drafts” in the IE gmail window, I was kicked to the Firefox window. That… seems weird to me.

Does anyone know why this is happening, and how I can correct it? Do you think it’s more likely to be a gmail issue or a browser issue?

@glacial: “Please do not castigate me for this choice. It is the browser I like”

I’ve been trying to answer this question without doing this, and realized that the best I can do is answer the last question…

@glacial: “Do you think it’s more likely to be a gmail issue or a browser issue?”

browser.

@glacial In all fairness, I think @tom_g has tried to answer your question honestly. He has told you (a) that what you’re experiencing is a browser problem, and (b) that the only available solution—short of purchasing Microsoft and putting some people on it—is to switch browsers. Furthermore, I would venture to guess that @tom_g can tell you what is causing your specific issue—viz., Microsoft’s consistent refusal to adhere to web standards and insistence on buggy idiosyncrasies—but that he sees going into that level of detail as breaking your rules about castigating IE use. It’s not that your question cannot be answered, then, but rather that your question is essentially asking us to tell you anything but the answer.

Out of sheer annoyance, I have flagged this question for deletion. I have been using IE for a long time. It is not my only browser. I am not stupid. I realize that a lot of people don’t like IE (why do I have to repeat myself on this point?). I realize that it might be an IE issue. That is not the area within which I am interested in suggestions.

I have been a gmail user almost since it started, and it is not at all uncommon for it to randomly have glitches. I have posted on gmail forums often, and noticed 2 things:

Everyone starts out by blaming IE
Eventually, the issues I have posted about end up being experienced by Firefox users, too
Only once the Firefox users start complaining does anyone try to think of an alternative solution.

That is why I posted this question to Fluther. While specifically saying I am not interested in an “IE sucks!!!” kind of answer. But I guess my expectations were too high.

Honest question: Isn’t there an IE10 version out now? or am I wrong?

@glacial – You have said that you prefer IE, but it is not your only browser. You asked if it was a browser problem… and you have not been able to replicate the glitch in Firefox.

I am not a computer professional, and I do not have a preferred browser. I use different browsers for different things – such as using Chrome to access google-owned sites and services like gmail, YouTube, and Google+ – because I figure they’ll play nice with each other Perhaps you could do that and continue using IE for the other browsing you do?

@hearkat When you say “you have not been able to replicate the glitch in Firefox”, please understand that I tried once in Firefox, and the glitch did not occur. I have also had the glitch not occur in IE perhaps 150 times.

I have tried to explain why I am asking for a gmail-based explanation, but since no one is able to think about the problem from that perspective, I would ask… yet again… .and again… for people not to offer any more answers in the “stop using IE” vein.

@glacial – For the record, I didn’t suggest that you “stop using IE”. Feel free to use whatever browser you wish to access the interwebz. I only suggested that as a workaround, you use Google’s Browser in order to access Google’s services. After using it for a couple weeks, the intermittent glitch will have shown itself if it is not a browser issue. I use the Mail client on my Apple devices to access gmail and haven’t had a problem, so It is rare that I use any browser for that purpose.

Although the gmail-IE9 problems posted in this forum aren’t exactly like yours, perhaps the following will give you an idea of where to begin your attempt at resolution:

“1. Click Tools and choose Compatibility View Settings
2. Remove google.com from the big text box if it is there (in some versions it may not be.)
3. Uncheck the three check boxes under the text box – this is very important, or Microsoft will just switch CV back on again next time you start IE.
4. Restart IE.

Note : In IE9, press the Alt key to toggle the main menu bar on.”
