I love the sound of a well played piano & an epic drum beat, but hate the sound that screams forth from the Scottish pig, otherwise known as bagpipes.

I am not particularly fond of horns, trumpets, saxes, trombones, that kind of thing.
More of a stringed instrument person.
love
The French Horn and Piano
RUNNERS UP: Guitar, Cello, Hammond Organ, Harmonica
dislike
Flute
Not a fan of: Hammond B3 organ sorry @cookieman), electric slide guitar (CW style), brushed cymbals.
Sucker for: tabla drums, tympanies, cello, lever harp
I like and or appreciate the sounds of all musical instruments. I am particularly fascinated with the sounds that a talented musician can make with a simple didgeridoo and also a harmonica.
I don’t really like Jazz music but the sleazy sound of a saxophone makes my insides rumble.
I can live without these:
Banjo (except when Steve Martin or Earle Scruggs plays it)
Accordian
Ukulele (except when used as a jazz instrument)
I love all other instruments, especially the cello, piano, guitars of all kinds (including flamenco), and violins.
I love bagpipes. You have to think about their purpose. They were designed to be played during wartime.
I especially like the sound of the oboe.
I love the violin. Not a big fan of the cello.
I also really like the triangle in many of Tchaikovsky’s pieces. Such a simple thing.
@marinelife Sorry but I really dislike bagpipes! No doubt they sound great in the outdoors but they screech and probably frighten horses and foes in equal measure.
I do agree with you over the sound of an oboe – I used to play one, albeit badly, at school.
I love most instruments, but not a huge pipe organ. Too many competing sounds with the underlying drone of the organ. And it’s usually played much too loud for my taste.
I love the sound of steel drums.
I dislike artificial music of any kind, but that doesn’t really qualify as a musical instrument anyway.
I think every instrument can sound amazing or nauseating, it depends on how it’s played!
@SomeoneElse, I’m with you about bagpipes. With apologies to bagpipe lovers, they’re just noise to my tender pachyderm ears.
Not a fan of most bagpipes, tambourines or cymbals.
I love lower-tuned instruments.
Love: saxophone, clarinet, oboe, cello
Dislike: Violin, accordion, pipe organ, trumpet.
Bagpipes, I like if heard in the manner that they were designed to be heard; from a distance over open ground.
I like the harp especially but I like the sound of most instruments, even the bagpipes.
I love the sound of guitars and french horns. In concert band, I always liked the sound of chimes. They always seemed to make their point in pieces of music. I like the sound of tenor and alto Saxophones, too.
Some instruments depend on how they’re played and context. I love the mellowness of a piano in a rock song, or a jazz flute. Tympani sound good in dramatic concert pieces when they are rolled and thundering.
Bagpipes are hideous; accordions and harmonicas aren’t too much better sounding to me either.
It largely depends on who and what is playing. But generally I love all instruments almost equally. Or maybe the great one playing in front of me…
But saxes hands down are my ultimate. I have caught myself unconciously drawn like a moth to a flame a street musician streets down, before I even consciously realize I am hearing music much less what instrument is being played.
Cheers folks, good stuff.
As I said in my details, bagpipes just make a din like choking a chicken.
@ucme I was going more for a goose with a sore throat.
Works just as well, when they’re first kicked into gear it’s more like a pig with bronchitis.
Mass bagpipes are my favourite sound in the world! Sorry @ucme Having said that, hearing a lone piper play in the mountains of the highlands was the most haunting sound, so for me they work well together or alone, I love them.
@Leanne1986 Your apology is accepted, but most unnecessary.
The fact that you love What’s Up Doc, marks you out as one of my fave people on here…end of.
I loathe the recorder. Cheap plastic squeaky noisemakers designed to get small children interested in musical instruments and make their parents rue the day they were born.
I used to fake illness when we went to music class in 1st grade because I hated the recorder so much. I don’t know if it was obvious to my teacher or not, but I spent as many recorder lessons as possible in the nurse’s office.
