How to wear armor to a convention? (For those with cosplay experience)
I know I’m a nerd lol but this question is directed at anyone who might have any cosplaying experience or at least know someone who does.
I already have a costume for the rest of this year, but it is made out of cloth so it’s easy to walk around and be comfortable in. My giant project for the conventions of 2014 is a Dragoon armor from Final Fantasy XIV. It looks like this: http://evil-siren.deviantart.com/art/FFXIV-Dragoon-Cosplay-Esumi-Aoi-1-381891093
That’s a person cosplaying it and this is the official art:

Awesome right? I think I can make it as long as I take my time (over the next 6 months) without getting frustrated. Problem is, how will I even wear this to a convention? I drive or have my boyfriend drive me, but how would I even fit in a car? How do people in general transport their armor costumes in general? They take up a lot of space…

Can’t you put it on after you get there?
but the thing is, where would I put it on? It’d be a different situation if we had a hotel room (because most of these are in hotels) but I don’t know how practical it is to be half naked in a parking lot getting dressed :/
The bathroom could work or maybe take a bus so you could stand up?
Given that many at cons are walking around at least half-naked anyways, changing in the parking lot isn’t as impractical as it would seem.
Why not get a hotel room? Besides the benefits of being able to change in it, you and your boyfriend can do some cosplaying of your own after the convention.
If you are making your armor out of real metal you are making a big mistake. The ones that are worn at conventions are generally made out of specially designed/dyed plastic.
Nearly all hotels have numerous public bathrooms. Your best bet is to get together with 4 or 5 others and share the price of a room.
You could make the main outfit without the spikes, then make a separate piece with spikes on it to overlay the main part. I’m envisioning a sort of long ‘vest’ type thing with the spikes running down the back, and leg straps to make the lower spikes on the vest conform to the shape of your body. The separate piece would be made out of the same material(s)/colors as the main outfit, so that once it’s on you can’t really tell it’s separate.
You’d wear the main outfit as you travel, and just slip the second piece on once you get there.
The costume in the photo, nor the one I’m making is metal. It’s thermoplastic. And we can’t get a hotel room because they literally sold out for the convention a couple weeks after the last one. We want a room, it’s incredibly convenient, there just aren’t any. The spikes for the most part seem to be best made when actually on the outfit :( the girl I posted put up progress pics and a tutorial of hers. I’m not using the same material for everything but most tutorials I watch have the spikes on the outfit. sigh I guess the bathroom might just have to do :/ lol I’m tryna figure out how people even sit in these. I just think it looks awesome, but I suppose I need to prepare for this one to be uncomfortable
One year I took five teenagers to a SciFi convention in a rented RV. We parked in the hotel parking lot during the day, and parking on the street was legal for the night. We had one of the most enjoyable weekends ever – and that’s saying a lot, since we were regular convention attendees.
Is there another hotel within walking distance of the convention that has rooms?
@WestRiverrat If by “walking distance” you mean “10 miles”.... probably not. It might be possible for the OP to get a room for the 2015 con if she hurries. Major cons tend to book nearby (and I use that term loosely) hotels solid pretty far in advance.
