American Jellies: Do you and your family have a July 4th tradition which you try to follow every year?

Asked by jca (36062points) July 4th, 2013

Do you have a July 4th tradition which you try to follow every year?

I don’t, my family never did have a particular tradition. We just go with the flow, which might mean visiting each other for a cookout, visiting friends for their cookouts, or going somewhere to watch fireworks.

I ask because I live in a little lake community, which used to be a “summers only” community. Every year on July 4th a fire truck leads a little parade of a few vehicles and bikes and people walking, waving, through the main road and onlookers watch and wave. Then all participants and anybody who lives here can go have hot dogs at a central spot. Every year, same thing, parade and hot dogs, probably for the past 60 years, and it’s quaint and kind of precious, like a little local slice of Americana. That’s what makes me ask.

I was in parades as a youngster and watched them as an adult when younger. Also saw a whole lot of fireworks.

Now? We just usually try to have a summery meal. This year we are going to grill out now that we have our own house!

No. Unless playing each one by ear (year) can be twisted into being a family tradition.

A good excuse for some non guilt time off, if I ever needed one.

From another question about the same thing…
” I used to always have plans for the 4th. A local classic rock station would always put on a free show with fireworks which was nice. They’d always get an older classic rock band to play and while they are no longer in their prime it was nice to get a chance to see bands like Foreigner, Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, Bad Company, Journey, Joan Jett and some others over the years. Last year was the first year they switched it from the park to an actual stadium and started charging something like $50 for tickets so unfortunately that tradition has come to an end.”

This year I ended up going over my bosses house for a BBQ and fireworks. Had a really good time so I wouldn’t mind makin a tradition out of that.

Most of my family has passed away, and there are no traditions that I follow anymore. I didn’t even celebrate the last three July 4ths.

It was hotter than the Fourth of July here yesterday, so naturally when the sun hit its zenith and was glaring straight down so that there was virtually no shade, I went out for a good brisk 3 mile walk. It’s uphill from my house to the town center, and I planned to stop by a Walgreen’s Pharmacy there and pick up a few essentials. By the time I reached the top of the hill and saw Eagle Bank’s electronic sign and thermometer, I already knew it was 100 ºF (37.78 ºC). Sweat was pouring into my eyes and stinging so much I could barely see.

The real surprise came on the way home. The hill had reversed itself due to some unfelt and mysterious seismic activity, and it was uphill all the way back too. So I know live on a new and higher plane of Earth. I plan to keep repeating this walk till the increased elevation results in more reasonable temperatures.
