Anybody know what this bridge thing in Manhattan is called and what used for?

Asked by anartist (14813points) July 4th, 2013

I think I saw cars on it but it doesn’t seem to go much of anywhere. Victorian-looking overpass thing at Vanderbilt Ave and E 45th, Manhattan.

Mayor Bloomberg has excellent staff and I’m sure if you email that photo to the relevant department someone there can help you. Google NYC government or NYC departments and get the Mayor’s office, and ask them who or what department can help you.

Perhaps part of the Grand Central Station complex. I’ll ask several of my college friends who live in the city and see what they have to say.

Or check out the Park Avenue Viaduct, which looks like it is connected in some way.

Vandebilt Ave. is named after Cornelius Vanderbilt, who built Grand Central Terminal, its official name.

It’s part of the Park Avenue viaduct. You can’t see it from the ground, but it is possible to drive into those buildings. There are a lot of elevated roadways around there to bypass traffic.

You can get a better view of the area in Google Street View. This appears to be the end of a ramp that runs parallel to Vanderbilt and terminates at the wall of the building to the left in your photo. (Perhaps the Google street view vehicle was ordered off the ramp when it was halfway up, because you can’t follow the view – on the ramp – more than about halfway up.)

As @zenvelo has noted, there is also access to some parking garages on the ramp, which is also clear in the Street Views.

Good luck following those views without getting dizzy or otherwise disoriented.

I feel home sick. :(

It looks like it disappears into Grand Central Station but it would seem that the cars would be appearing in the middle of the great vaulted ceiling. Fascinating. Thanks all!

Oh, still miss it. :(
Congrats to your niece. It is always nice to see young people reach for their dreams.
