Do you tip with "to go" orders?
You know, like do you tip when you order pick up at a restaurant?
Let’s assume you already know that the restaurant is typically a full service sit down style but they also provide catering and food for to go.
I ask because I never really knew about tipping a to go order probably until a couple years ago.

I usually do.
Maybe just a dollar or two because they don’t really wait on you they just ring up the order.
Nix that with special food allergies any place I get food and feel safe doing so meaning staff is helpful and diligent get an overly generous tip from me.
I guess I almost never pick up orders any more.
There is usually a tip jar at the counter and I put all the change in it.
I never have, and never thought about it. And I am a crazy tipper. I usually tip around 50% (but I barely ever eat out). I always tip for delivery or for kitchen to table.
I guess I never think that tips are split with the kitchen even when I know they are. Now that I think about it I will tip for that. Just not as much. A few bucks on a 10 dollar order.
Not usually. The only times are when they go out of their way to fix an issue with the order.
Tipping seems to be a hot topic this month. In this case, I usually don’t do it unless some sort of personal service is involved or there’s a tip jar.
Yes.
I used to work Carside to Go at Applebee’s, where we took the food out to the customer’s car. In 4 hours, I probably made about $20 in tips, plus my whopping $4/hr. In retrospect, $9/hr isn’t too shabby for a high school kid. I had to take orders by phone, wrap up all the food in the kitchen, bag it, and haul it outside in the heat, cold, rain, etc. Most people tipped me, but only a couple of dollars.
The only take-out we get is Chinese. They certainly don’t take it out to my car, but I tip them $3 on a $25 check. That’s probably more than what’s necessary, but oh well.
However, I don’t tip places like sandwich shops or restaurants with similar service layouts.
We tip 10% for preparing the meal to go.
Why? Tipping is for service. What service was provided?
I handle take outs that the Italian restaurant I work at. While I don’t understand what exactly I’m doing to deserve a tip other than placing food in box and box in bag then walking five feet to a door (my job…), I do often get tips. Obviously not as nice as the wait staff but on a good night I can leave with an extra 30–50$
Nope, I live in a tipless country.
I do, but less than for table service.
It depends on the waiting time, how they treat me, and the comfort.
Yes, but usually just $1 or so. Even though the counter employees didn’t serve a meal at a table or deliver food to my home, I know that they don’t make much money.
I go to lots of baseball games and usually avoid the caloric, overpriced food and beverages. But, if I do buy something, I give $1 to the vendor.
There’s a barbecue place here that has a separate take out pick up door next to the regular restaurant entrance. They do a lot to put the order all together to go, so I usually tip a couple dollars on an order for the family.
The local Chinese place it’s all put together back in the kitchen, all they do up front is ring up the bill, so I don’t tip them.
I don’t tip when I pick up a pizza to go.
Yes, usually just a $1 or $2, depending on how big the order is.
Once in a while I don’t tip in that situation. Pizza to go I might, might not. Chinese I usually do. Places like Chilis, J. Alexander’s I would.
