What happens if I eat mold?

Asked by kimchi (1442points) July 8th, 2013

Today, I ate a dinner roll with little spots of mold on it. I ate about half of the roll, and now my stomach hurts and it’s all gassy. Please help, what should I do?

… Did you know that it had mold on it and eat it purposefully?

Anyways here’s a neat video that talks about food mold.

You digest it.

I remember way back in high school, one of the “macho” guys who liked to do outrageous stuff to impress the girls brought a very moldy sandwich to class one day and asked the science teacher what would happen if he ate the sandwich.
She replied that nothing bad would happen because the acids in his stomach would kill and digest the mold. So he proceeded to eat the whole sandwich and grinned while doing it.
As I recall, he survived just fine.

Might not taste as good on an old dinner roll as on a fine blue cheese, but maybe it will serve as penicillin if you are ailing.

Most mold won’t kill you or even hurt you. As others have noted, the dining experience may be less than satisfactory, but I suspect that your gas and other subsequent discomfort are unrelated to the mold itself.

Most sailors in wooden ships of the time routinely ate moldy, rotting and weevil-infested food (which got worse as the voyage progressed) within a few weeks of leaving the harbor with fresh supplies. Since they had no refrigeration, inadequate storage facilities, and lived in a constantly damp marine environment with no sanitation, you can imagine (or you can read about) how bad it was. It wasn’t usually the food that killed them. More likely the water.

Nothing will happen. Your tummy most likely does not hurt from eating the bread with a spot of mold. Don’t worry about it.

All of what the above said is true, EXCEPT if you have a mold sensitivity. It is rare and it is highly unlikely that you do. But if you have a mold sensitivity, it is theoretically possible that you could get very sick.

Again, highly unlikely. But possible.

If you wake up this morning and are able to read this, there’s a really good chance it didn ‘t hurt you.

This is like asking what happens if I eat plants? Some plants will kill you If you eat them and some plants are very healthy for you to eat.

@2davidc8 Yup, nothing like a mouth full of mold to get the girls.
