Is there a song that you always thought was performed by a different artist from the people actually singing/playing?
Stuck in the middle with you always sounds a bit like Paul McCartney to me when it starts out. It’s actually Stealers Wheel but I thought it was The Beatles for quite a while.
This is my work theme song. Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right. Here I am.. stuck in the middle with you.

Similarly, I always thought Stuck in the Middle with You was by Bob Dylan — until I learned it was Stealers Wheel.
For years I thought Rock And Roll Hoochi Koo was Led Zepplin, but it was actually Rick Derringer.
I also thought Holding Back the Years was by Carly Simon, but it was Simply Red, which is funny since they are male lead vocal. As a matter of fact, so many thought she did that, she worked that song into her repertoire
@filmfann – I’m going to have to go and listen to that again now and see if it makes me think of Carly. I’ve always known it was Mick Hucknell. He’s a Manchester boy and I always liked Simply Red, so I’ve never confused their work. Interesting.
Poor Stealers Wheel @cookieman. That’s two of us who didn’t know it was there work for a while.
When I was a kid, I thought Todd Rundgren’s songs, “Hello It’s Me” and “I Saw the Light”, were sung by a female.
When I was a kid, I thought Savage Garden’s songs were sung by a female.
Not really, but the Tears for Fears song Sowing the Seeds of Love totally sounds like The Beatles in their Sgt Pepper mode.
^^ I agree. I really like Tears for Fears. Wonder if they’ll tour again?
And yes @dxs, I can see how you would think that.
I don’t really know Todd Rundgren’s music (off the top of my head). I probably do but didn’t know it was him @hearkat.
Thanks Jellies.
I always believed that All The Young Dudes (mott the hoople) was Bowie.
@Bellatrix and @Blondesjon I knew that was Mott the Hoople, but I always thought that sounded like John Lennon.
^^ I also thought it was David Bowie.
Years ago I thought it was a female singer who did those amazing gospel-type vocals on Dark Side of the Moon. At the time my younger brother told me it was a male. So that’s what I believed for decades till recently, I learned from a terrific documentary on the making of that fabulous album that it’s indeed a woman. I’d love to tell my brother but we aren’t on speaking terms and anyway, true to his nature, he’d either claim he always knew it was a woman or, more likely, he wouldn’t remember at all.
Thanks for the info, @hearkat. I’ve heard of that film but didn’t know she was featured. I’m going to see it too. Maybe I’ll see you in the popcorn line.
