Who has played with emulators and ROMs?
I downloaded this ROM of Final Fantasy III, a fan translated version, from coolrom.com a while ago. I use the NES emulator FCEUltra, btw. And it’s always worked just fine ever since I downloaded it years ago.
I finally got around to wanting to play FFIII, and I started it and did a few things got to a couple towns, and then saved my game. When I exited the emulator, I got an error saying something like “WRAM file (and then it has the path in my files to where my FF Rom is except it has a folder I don’t have for saved games) cannot be written to” And then when I play the game again, my saved game is gone. For some reason it’s not saving the game. I wonder if anyone has come up with an error like this or what this could mean. I tried making a subfolder that I thought it needed for saved games, but that didn’t work, the error still came up.

It’s possible that the file you’re trying to write to (when you attempt to save a game) isn’t owned by you or that you don’t have permission to modify it. Also, if the program is poorly written it’s possible that it assumes you will have created the file before you start and will error out when it discovers that the file does not exist.
When you tried creating the file, was the file created successfully? Can you check the permissions and ownership of the created file, and those of its parent folder?
Have you successfully used FCEULtra with other ROMs, including successfully saving games?
Does FCEUltra come with any useful docs? It might, for example, fall back to reading save files from your home directory, but you wouldn’t know that if the devs don’t document that behavior- or there might be a config file somewhere you can edit to specify the location of savefiles, etc. If there’s a manual, then check it out.
Is FCEUX the program you are using? I couldn’t find an official page for FCEUltra, and Wikipedia makes me think it’s been unsupported and undeveloped since 2004. I wouldn’t expect it to work very well anymore. FCEUX, on the other hand, has good online documentation – but it doesn’t explicitly support WRAM files, whatever those are.
I would right click on the icon you use to launch the emulator and run as administrator.
Is it possible you are saving in-game instead of using save states? I use different types of emulators, but haven’t used one for the NES, but I’ve seen that a lot of them come with save states and I use them frequently.
Actually it’s FCEUX, made an error. But yes, like I said, IT HAS ALWAYS WORKED. Other games saved on them fine, etc, etc.
@BBawlight I know I’m saving in-game. I always save in-game. For some reason, I can’t use save states.
But I guess, @rexacoracofalipitorius I found my answer – maybe this version doesn’t support the kind of save file this ROM uses. I guess I just have to find another ROM.
Or you could try higen, an emulator for multiple Nintendo systems. Worth a shot…
