I’ve never heard of a “general” American accent. You don’t sound southern to me. I was going to say Mid-Atlantic, but a few of your pronunciations threw me—“laygs” in daddy long-legs and pah-JAM-ahs (pajamas), for example—made me think maybe Midwest. But then I think you said “soda,” not “pop.” I’ll guess western Pennsylvania or Maryland or somewhere near there?
You sound like I do without the confidence. I will go with west coast.
You don’t have a southern accent, but how you say coupon and pecan you say like some southerners, so you either live in a part of the country that is not the south, but just has that in common with the south, or you are in a part of the south that sounds rather northern. You don’t sound midwestern to me at all. I would guess south FL (Latitude of Orlando and south across the state) or west coast (California, Washington, Oregon).
@Gailcalled – there wasn’t good answers on that one because y’all went off track.
JLeslie – I’m from the south but my family is from California so that might be why.
The way you say pecan and deter are close to an accent I heard from my friend who is from Franklin, Tenn.
It’s not thick but I can hear it.
I’m guessing west coast of the us, and some florida
@RockerChick14 I have give away words that I was raised by New Yorkers. I can kind of adjust my accent because I have lived so many places, but words like coffee, talk, and January tend to give me away as having NY somewhere in my history.
So, I guess I guessed your accent correctly. Where in the south are you from?
@JLeslie – near the North Carolina/South Carolina border.
Midatlantic then. @answerjill mentioned that. Although, she guessed Maryland and you don’t sounds suburban DC or Baltimore MD to me at all. But, maybe southern MD.
My mistake, you said NC and SC border, I don’t know why I was thinking NC and VA.
NC and SC would most certainly be southern.
@Jleslie – what is an midatlantic accent? Sorry if I didn’t type it right, I have dyslexia so it’s not always clear.
Mid Atlantic is PA through VA. Although, there is a world of difference between a PA and VA accent actually. Plus, PA is different from east to west, and VA is different from suburban DC down south and over to the west.
Maybe I just have a weird accent. Lol
@RockerChick14 You don’t have a weird accent. Overall it is very neutral.
East coast NC. West southern accent is stronger.
@Pandora do you mean west and southern of the state of NC, or the south?
@JLeslie – Yup, I didn’t mean suburban DC or Baltimore. (I’ve lived around there and would probably recognize those.)
answerjill – so I have a midatlantic accent?
Dunno. I am not an expert! There are some quizzes and tests that you can take online to try to figure it out. You can Google to find them. If you moved around a bit or your parents are from somewhere else, then you might have a mix.
There are quizzes as mentioned above, they can be fun. I know if you say Mary, merry and marry all differently you are not from the south. LOL.
I took two quizzes and the southern one is 85% and the neutral one is 88%
Why are you so interested/concerned about your accent?
Sounds a bit like it’s from the upper Midwest.
