Are there any songs that you hated when they first came out (at the time they were popular) but yet years later, you had a new appreciation for?

Are there any songs that you like now, but at the time they came out you couldn’t stand them?

For me, one is Jackson Browne “Runnin on Empty” – that’s one I can think of offhand.

Other songs that were popular when I was a kid, like the Commodores and Earth, Wind and Fire, I now like.

The first time I heard “Strawberry Fields Forever”, I thought,“What the hell is THAT thing ?”

Over the years it has become one of my favorite Beatle songs…

I never liked the inexpressive voice of Karen Carpenter, but years after her death I found her Christmas album very nice.

Anything by Journey.

Summer Breeze by Seals and Croft.

Most disco, including Shake Your Booty by K.C. and the Sunshine band. At the time this song, and most other disco stuff came out, me and my friends were interested in The Beatles, The Doors, Journey, Rush, Led Zeppelin and then the new wave stuff like Spandau Ballet, The Thompson Twins, Human League etc. Hated disco, but now I love it.

How about a whole musical? I couldn’t stand Three Penny Opera when I first heard it. Learned to love it.

Loads and loads of them. I was in my teens during the 80s and I was more a New Romantic type, and I hated the ska and mod songs that were popular at the time. Now I love them (so long as Paul Weller isn’t involved, I still can’t stand him).

I’ve also developed a fondness for 1940s style jazz and swing.

My dad used to play Oh Superman by Laurie Anderson every morning and when he first started doing it, for months I thought the washing machine was broken. I learned to like her in college but in middle school—I thought she was a terrible musician.
