Are these side effects very serious?

Asked by ScottyMcGeester (1897points) July 17th, 2013

I just had my wisdom teeth taken out very early this morning (8am)

Afterwards, the doc prescribed Vicodin (acetaminophen) and Amoxycillin (to prevent/combat any infection I could get from the wounds)

The Vicodin was prescribed every 4 hours. I took it with the amoxycillin around 1 pm. I was fine for a while, and then for about five minutes I got suddenly very warm. I felt nauseous and wanted to throw up. I threw up a tiny bit, more coughing up. I’ve been eating little compared to usual of course today. But then it went away. The pamphlet said any nausea must be from the drugs and to take soda to feel better. So I did.

4 hours later, I took Vicodin again (not the amoxycilin, as it’s 3 times a day) and afterwards I felt nauseous again. Around dinner time, it was time to take the amoxycilin again. About an hour later, I was nauseous a third time and actually threw up some of my dinner. Not a lot. Just like five seconds-worth of throw up.
I’m starting to get a little paranoid and want to double-check if this is all okay. I’ve been looking up stuff on the Internet, and of course run into horror stories. If anything, I can’t quite tell if the reaction I’m having is from the antibiotic or the Vicodin, as side effects of nausea are known to occur on both. But what really worried me and pushed me to ask Fluther was the dosage I realized on the bottle – 750mg. When I checked online, they said to not really exceed 1,000mg a day of Vicodin.

As of right now, I feel fine. After I vomited the nausea went away for good and hasn’t come back. I don’t plan on taking the Vicodin again, as the pamphlet says anyway to take it when the pain is severe. The pain really isn’t “severe”.

I haven’t experienced any other side effects than the feeling warm/nausea/and vomiting, in that exact order. The second time I got nauseous I didn’t throw up though.

Yes… you might be allergic to amoxicillin.

A lot of people don’t stomach Vicodin well.

(Vicodin I’ve received has always been 5–325 – that is, 5mg hydrocodone, 325mg acetaminophen – 750 seems high).

I got amoxyicillin and it turned me purple. I’m not saying a little rash. My body from the neck down was the color of a plum.

@talljasperman The thought occurred to me, but I swore I’ve had amoxicillin before. I’ve had a lot of antibiotics before in life and don’t remember this happening, so maybe that’s why I thought it was the Vicodin more.

I haven’t turned any odd color. I keep checking for jaundice but nope. It’s already been way past a good 4 hours since the last time I took Vicodin. Though like I said I took amoxycillin and then later that trio of side effects occurred. It’s just that the effects have been relatively close to the pills I took that I’m unsure what it’s from.

If you aren’t used to taking vicodin then it will knock you on your feet esp in such large doses.

Some alternatives.. cut the vicodin into smaller doses or eat prior to taking it. Also you can call the dentist and ask for a smaller prescription or an alternate drug.

I’d definitely check with the Dentist tomorrow about the reaction to Amoxicillin. Most people tolerate it well, but there are those among us lucky enough to be allergic to it, and there are plenty pf alternative antibiotics. It will definitely help you tolerate the Vicodin if you eat an hour or so before taking a dose. You can also have some Pepto Bismal on hand to settle the tummy, and take that when you take the pain killer. 750 isn’t an unusual does for the pain of major dental extractions, as that can be pretty severe pain.

Get well soon, Scotty

@talljasperman I remember now when I’ve taken amoxicillin before – I had an ear infection a couple years ago. No side effects ever occurred.

@ETpro Thanks, man. In the long run though, I won’t want to take Vicodin anymore for this. Not just because of these reactions but because I really actually don’t need it. I’ve had many dental operations done before and am used to them, so the wisdom teeth extraction really wasn’t as bad as people made out to be. All I feel is a general “heavy feeling” in the lower jaw where they were taken out, like my body knows that something has been done there. But I was just simply following the doc’s orders in the beginning. I’ll stick to the amoxicillin tomorrow, hopefully nothing like this will happen, and I’ll probably call the doc anyway to make sure. This is the first time ever I’ve taken Vicodin, so I’m pretty sure that’s it.
I’m just a little paranoid hoping I don’t have to be hospitalized or eventually die or anything crazy like that.

There’s definitely no need to take a strong pain killer if you aren’t in strong pain. Vicodin is the trade name for Oxycodone and I have to take oxycodone occasionally for painful back spasms due to osteoarthritis pinching a major nerve bundle where it exits my backbone. It never makes me nauseous. It does cause me to get the hiccups. But it also renders me pretty silly and some of the most creative of my typos here were thanks to that stuff. So I wouldn’t take it if the pain didn’t require it..

My guess would be that it’s the Vicodin making you sick, unless, like me, you’re allergic to amoxicillin.
I’ve never had any issues with Vicodin. When I got my root canal I didn’t have much pain, I just took the Vicodin that the dentist prescribed for me for fun.
It made me happy, not sick. lol
I would definitely quit taking it if you don’t need it. For most people, discomfort can be helped by taking an OTC medication like Advil.

Oops. Vicodin is actually hydrocodone—a bit less active than oxycodone.

You’re having a side effect of the Vicodin. It’s very common. I get the same thing—it’s why I never take narcotics after surgery. I once had to talk my surgeon OUT of giving me narcotics. I told her, “What would you rather me have, in pain or puking my guts out?”

Last time I took Vicodin I turned stupid and forgot, so I took another one => hurled for 4 hours.

Oh i forgot to mention, allergic reaction to antibiotics almost always is accompanied by a rash. I do think it’s the vicodin.
