How long will it take for the stitched wound to heal?

Asked by agop (4points) July 22nd, 2013

I had a large birthmark (4.5cm by 1.5cm) removed from my back. It was cut out and then stitched up (no grafting) exactly 3 weeks ago. The wound must be about 8–9cm in length. Could you tell how long more it will take to heal and to cover up with skin? It still hurts when I bend etc.

Depends on depth of wound and how many layers of stitching were appled. Did you use a plastic surgeon? When do you return to have stitches removed? This is really a question for him. (Or, should I say questions.)

Incision from knee replacement surgery, for example, will be sore, hot and uncomfortable for several months, at least, after surgery. Healing is a slow and gradual process.

Just one layer of stitches was applied. Performed by a plastic surgeon. Dissolvable stitches which was covered by a bandage. I saw the doctor after two weeks, which was when he removed the bandage. He told me I was ready to do anything I wanted though the wound hadn’t yet healed and I told him there was some pain. In the past week the wound from outside hasn’t changed much though I can move more. So I’m wondering how long more it will take for the wound to heal? Is there a way I can attach a photo here?

There is, but since we are not doctors, with one exception (whom I will send this question to), you are apt not to get anything useful, or else some guesses that will not be helpful.

As long as you are not running a temperature or showing signs of infection, and the doctor saw the incision a week ago and felt that things are progressing normally, and was aware that it is still painful and not yet healed, just deal with your comfort level and do what you do.

That you can move more means that it is healing, however slowly.

You can send a photo file from tinypic.com, imgur, flickr, and similar sites if you really want to.

About 3–4 months. Or never, I have a stitch that never will go away.

There you have it…three weeks to four months…the result of medical consultation online with non-doctors.
