What do you think about changing baseboard color from one room to the next?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) July 23rd, 2013

I’m considering doing very dark wood kitchen cabinets in a house I might be building. Possibly ebony, which is basically black. If not ebony, it will be very dark brown. I was thinking maybe paint the baseboards to match the cabinets and a light colored tile floor, light walls, and light granite or quarts counters. However, it is possible I will do wood floors in the main entry and I think white or light baseboards would look best with the dark floor. Have you ever seen different baseboard colors in a house? Will it look like a hodge podge? The house will be about 3,000 sq. ft.

Just remember you may want to sell the house in the future, personal choice like ebony baseboards may not be the norm and there for have a limit on potential buyers. That aside I would love to get rid of the “White everywhere” look at my house.

You might want to change the material you use for the baseboard. Maybe granite tiles that match your countertops?
If there is a clear break in the space I think it’s ok to change colors. The trouble comes in the transition from one color to the next. If the rooms are completely seperate go for it.
I wouldn’t worry about keeping it generic vanilla for resale. I have never had trouble selling a house and I go out of my way to be tasteful but different.
My biggest inspiration for color choices was the Wynn hotel in Vegas. Chocolate browns and deep reds. Love it.

@Judi I’m nervous about going as dark as ebony. I love it when I see it, but not sure I will like living in it. Currently I have chocolate browns, green, rust. The ebony I would pair with shades of taupe and maybe an accent of red or green or rust, not sure. I don’t want it to wind up looking like a checker board. I have brown leather sofas that are getting old, so it doesn’t kill me to buy new furniture, but I am not sure I want to risk a whole color change. My dining room, bedroom, all that will match fine still, it’s just the fanily room that would be off the kitchen that would have to be switched up. At the same time a color change might be exciting. Thing is, when you move a lot, part of what makes the house feel like your house is all your furnishings and colorings feel familiar.

I wouldn’t like it. It might affect resale value.

Paint is cheap. If you don’t like it, change it back. It may take 3 or 4 coats but you need to make it yours.

I did some googling and found these photos with dark trim.

@Judi I agree about the paint, I should have been clearer, I meant for the cabinets. I am a little nervous about going that dark in general, especially things that are difficult and expensive to change.

I get it. I wouldn’t be afraid of it at all, especially with a light ceiling. I think the dark cabinets make it look rich.
