We just met a man here in Florida who is getting alimony from his former wife. I also worked with a man who was receiving alimony from his former wife and he had custody of the children and received child support from her for the children as well.

Yes, it happens all the time. When the woman earns more than the man, or the man has stayed home to take care of the house and family, the man is entitled to spousal support. I have a friend here whose husband was not earning much, his business was going belly up. The wife has a pretty good salary (over 200K) so she has had to pay him support for a total of five years.

I have a friend whose daughter is in the midst of a divorce. Because of the differences in their salaries, she will likely pay him alimony.

Yes and also lump sum settlements.

Yes an no. In some states it varies. It is not always an automatic response nor is all alimony till the person gets married. If they are both working and earning about the same and have been married a short time, than it won’t usually be automatic.
There are several things that come into play. Length of marriage, children, wages, and reason behind the divorce (criminal abuse) and age and health of the couple and assets. Some states grant automatic support if they have been married longer than 25 years. Some do it short term till the stay at home partner can find work and get back on their feet. Gender does not come into play.

Definitely. Here’s a Wall Street Journal article about it.

In my state, yes, if she made more money. Shit. Why didn’t I marry (and divorce) a hedge fund manager.
