What are the estimated year gaps to be considered a “80s baby"? ( Or 90s,00s,40s,70s,etc.)

Asked by SassyPink (284points) July 26th, 2013

In other words, what year of birth would “officially” make someone a “70s kid,” “10s kid”, etc?

I’m not sure whether the estimated year ranges would be based on decades or how much of the period you can recall from childhood. In one case, for example, would being born between the years 1990–1999 automatically make someone a “90s baby”? As opposed to being born between, let say, 1986–1993? In another case, a person born in the year 1960 could probably be a 60s kid, much like how a person born in the year 2010 could be a 10s kids.

I have two older siblings that were born in 1984 and 1986. Would my oldest sibling be a 80s kid while my other sibling would fall somewhere in between being a 80s or 90s kid? I also have a younger cousin who was born in 1999. In my cousin’s case, would it be safe to assume that she is more of a 00s kid than a 90s kid?

I was born five days before the ball dropped for 1986.

I’ve never really known how to consider myself in that regard. Probably a 90s kid, since my most memorable childhood passions were Ninja Turtles and Beakman’s World. And no 80s kid will remember spending all summer making replica Stick Stickleys out of their Bomb Pop wrappers.

I was born in 1959 and was a :kid” in the 60’s & 70’s. Well..I was 16 at the end of 1975…oooh, good times the 70’s were. haha
I am definitely a product of my generation, Sex, drugs and rock-in-roll. Well..these days, just a little herbal essence on occasion, little sex and some rock-n-roll. lol

I think high school years and maybe college are what most people refer to as their memorable years they hold onto when it comes to music and what is going on in the world. I was born in the late 60’s, so I would say I was a 60’s baby, and a kid in the 70’s, and a product of the 80’s.

I was 9 when 1980 came around. My memorable years were the 80s, so I’ve always considered myself an 80s kid. I had the big hair, Atari 2600 and the Xanadu LP. I have some friends who are 10 years younger then me and they consider themselves 80s kids, so it’s funny you asked this question. I was wondering myself!

I was born in 1995. I remember a lot of things from the 90s that carried over into the new millenium. The 00s and the 10s kinda all seemed like the same thing after a while, so I can’t really tell which one I fall under. And I’m still young, too.

@jonsblond I was born in 1990. So I’m definitely a true 90s kid in this case. I remembered the TGIF line up on ABC, was a Lisa Frank fanatic, and I still have my leathered mini-backpack in the closet from when I was 7. I guess I would count myself as a 00s kid as well since I’m part of the millennial generation and could remembered most stuff that transition into the millennium.

I was born in ‘84 and consider myself a 90’s kid. I don’t really have many memories of the 80’s.

@Seek_Kolinahr Nickelodeon was the best in the early 90’s.

@flip86 true THAT. Ren and Stimpy for the win!

I’m an ‘80s kid as I was too young during the ‘70s to remember much before the Reagan years aside from the music that was on the radio at the time; Eagles, Boston, and that hot, new hit, “We are the Champions” from Queen.

@jerv My older brother (the one born in ‘84) once told me that he barely remembered a few Nickelodeon shows in the late 80s before I was born. One of the shows that he remembered was called You Can’t Do that on TV. He would often compare that show with All That and would describe All That as YCDToTV meets Mickey Mouse Club (the third installment). lol. He also enjoyed All That. :) My sister would remember a show called Noozle that aired on Nick Jr when I was a toddler. Apparently she told me it was a cartoon about koala bears.

@Seek_Kolinahr You just got a star from me for referencing Stick Stickley and Ren & Stimpy. :)

This is just my general estimation and is by no means official, but I’d say that a person who’s 2–12 years old is a kid.

Given that, I’d say someone who was born sometime during 1964–1973 would mostly be a 70’s kid.

I was born in December, 1946 and I was definitely a 50’s kid.

@jerv One thing I do remember from the 70s was during a rerun of Gilligan’s Island, there was an interruption to announce the death of Elvis. That memory has never left my mind for some reason. Maybe because I was upset that the show was interrupted? lol. I know I didn’t care about Elvis, though my mom did. I was only 6.

I think that you have to be born at least 12 years before the numerified decade. I consider myself a child of the seventies because that is when I became a teenager and everything seems to revolve around this particular timeslot.

Headhurts's avatar

I was born in 1979, so I was a 80’s child.

JLeslie's avatar

@Headhurts You don’t identify more with the 90’s?

Headhurts's avatar

No, not at all. I was all things 80’s.

I was born in 1979 and I think the reason that I identify a bit with the 80s is because I have a brother who was 10 years older than me… so I was exposed to TV shows and game stations and things that my friends were not as exposed to.

So I think the age of your siblings might matter here.

@SassyPink I also remember You Can’t Do That on Television. It was a funny show. All I really remember about it was the chef that made gross burgers. The kids on the show would eat them and throw up.
