What is the best way to warm up french fries?

Asked by cutiepi92 (2252points) July 27th, 2013

Every time I go out to eat and have french fries left over, no matter how good they taste in the restaurant they are always gross and soggy when I heat them back up. What is the best method to do this to avoid sogginess?

I’d like to hear too; I’ve never been able to figure out a way so I just leave them at the restaurant.

I don’t think they are ever the same when you reheat, but what I do is put them on a piece of aluminum foil and toast or bake them for a couple minutes in the toaster oven.

I wonder if you refried them if they would be more like new? I’ve never tried that. That would be way too much effort for me, even if it did work.

Refrying them in hot grease will rejuvenate them to their former glory. You have to make sure your grease is at 350°F before you put them in. Just leave them in for about a minute or minute and a half. It really is more trouble than it’s worth.
Most fast food restaurants precook (cook about halfway) their fries which leaves them sitting there all sad and soggy. When someone orders fries they just toss a bit back into the frier for about a minute and then attempt to fool you with their ”fresh hot fries in just the nick of time” magic.

You can always use the oven, but if you have the munchies and want them within the next five minutes, you can put them in the microwave, with a small cup with a tiny bit of water in it on the side. It takes about 30–45 seconds, and they are not soggy, or rock hard.

I prefer the microwave. I wrap them in a paper towel and use about 30 seconds.

Put them on a cookie sheet, cover loosely with foil and reheat in a toaster or conventional over for about 10–15 minutes at around 375–400 degrees. Microwaves make them soggy

Reheat them in the oven but put them something that can go in the oven while keeping them standing up. The grease will pool on the bottom, so try to reheat them in something that will allow the grease to run away from the fries. If you don’t then the fries will be soggy.
Ever notice that fry packages in fast food chains are often long and narrow, and the fries on the bottom are the soggiest.
Microwaves don’t work because the steam come back onto the fry and makes it soggy. Plus the oil gets a horrible taste.

I either put them in the toaster oven for a few minutes, or put them in a skillet (with no oil) and just toss them around a bit until they heated. They’re not exactly the same, but pretty good.

I tried re-heating them in the microwave, but that left them soft and mushy.

I just thought to mention that if you want to use the ease of the microwave; if you let the fries come up to room temp first, and only microwave a few seconds it should not be as bad. This is true for almost anything that gets yuck in the microwave.

@JLeslie I agree. I use the microwave almost exclusively, and I have found that with the paper towels and setting on 30 seconds french fries are warmed up just fine.

If they’re thick, I stick them in the toaster oven.

If they’re thin, I toss them around a bit on the skillet (no added oil).

Microwave tends to make them this weird combo of mushy and chewy at the same time.
