Does sugaring (like waxing) work really well?

Asked by cutiepi92 (2252points) July 28th, 2013

I’m trying to lighten up my really dark underarms in an efficient manner. I heard that stopping shaving, exfoliating, and using lightening creams helps a lot. Since I tend to be allergic to a lot of different brands of wax (I know from having allergic reactions to getting my eyebrows waxed on different occasions) I figured sugaring would be the less toxic option. Does it work well? Does it hurt? How long does the hair in the area have to be for it to be effective?

I’ve used a product called Moom for a few years and it works well. I have fair skin and light/fine body hair, so I’m not sure if darker/coarser body hair does as well. I am not very coordinated, and tend to make a mess with the sticky stuff, but it rinses easily off skin, the linens and any surface in my bathroom, since it’s all natural.

I’m interested in this too! I’m so scared of pain lol

It hurts momentarily, the closest description I can think of is like a scrape or a rug burn that only lasts a few seconds. The sensation is essentially the same as waxing, if you’ve had that done.

Underarms are very tricky to do by yourself, since you don’t have much use of the one hand that you have to hold up. In my opinion, it’s worth it to get it done at a salon since they can do it very quickly and it’s a small area it usually doesn’t cost much. The trick is calling around and finding a place that uses sugar or a hypoallergenic wax.

Laser is the best way to get rid of underarm hair “permanently.” If you are interested in that I can give you more details.

The newer lasers you barely feel, it is almost painless. Ask where you are getting it done if it hurts. If they say it is like a rubber band snapping that might be an old laser. To give you an idea I would say the new lasers on a scale of 1–10 are a 2, waxing is a 6 to me. Plucking my eyebrows hurts more than the new lasers in my opinion, but the old lasers hurt quite a bit and had risk of hurting the skin. The lasers still work best on fair skinned people. If you have dark skin it might not be for you.

What happens is it only permanently removes hairs that are in a certain stage of growth. So, you shave completely (the newer lasers you shave) and they zap your underarm (if it hurts a lot stop and don’t go back there go to a different place to get it done) and the hairs in the right stage don’t grow back. You go about once a month for 5 or 6 treatments and over 80% of the hairs should be gone. I could tell after two treatments a huge difference. You can do electrolysis to catch the stray hairs that are still left, which is more painful, but very permanent. I did laser on my bikini and underarms and I am very happy. Although, there are still a few hairs left the difference is fantastic. Even if the hairs grow in a little in between shaves you can barely tell for a good 48 hours. If I went back for another two treatments I think I would be almost completely hair free in those areas.

Here’s the thing, since you are young, your body is still making new cells and hairs, etc. So, probably every 2–3 years you might need a touch up or a couple treatments if you want to really keep the hair away.

Sounds like something worth looking into. In MAC cosmetics I’m an NC45. Does that count as dark skin? Also, around how much did it run you per treatment?

As long as your hair is very dark I don’t think you should have any problem. I paid $100 per treatment, but I think you can get it cheaper now. A lot of places to packages like 6 treatments for a certain price.

I’m late on checking my own post lol. I think I’m too dark for laser treatment, and I don’t have that kind of money lol. But thanks though :) @hearkat for the first time I will probably go to a salon
