Gambling or drugs?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33521points) July 29th, 2013

The Baseball Hall of Fame inducted new members this weekend – sadly, no living player entered the Hall, only some people from three generations ago.

Why? largely because anyone of quality in the last 20 years (Sosa, Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, etc.) has admitted to using performance enhancing drugs. And the Baseball Writers association, who choose new Hall of Famers, look at drug use as cheating. (which it is)

And then there is poor Pete Rose, a truly superior baseball player, who gambled on ball games, and is also ineligible.

What’s fair here? What’s worse? Should gambling knock you out of the Hall of Fame? Gambling isn’t cheating like drug use is…

Performance enhancement to win a game is not cheating like gambling on the outcome of a game when you are in a position to influence the outcome.

In the first, “I want to win this game and will do what I can.”

In the second, “I have money on this game, don’t you win.”

I am not saying Pete Rose was ever in a position to throw a game, but the possibility of that happening (and it did happen with the Black Sox) is why gambling is so much worse than a PE drug use.

If so many were using PE drugs, then the playing field was pretty even. No one else could hit like Barry Bonds, no one else had the natural hand eye coordination needed to connect with the ball. Spitballers are in the Hall of Fame, why not Bonds and Sosa and McGwire?

I think gambling on games and drug use should keep you out. Neither are acceptable while playing in the sport.

Should rename it the hall of shame.

Gambling on the outcome of games implies that you might perform or underperform to achieve a certain outcome. Therefore, it is cheating.

Rose was also the manager when he was betting. How many times did he overuse a young pitcher, shortening their careers, to change the outcome of games he was betting on?

If he only had control of his own actions, I would let him into the Hall Of Fame, but he had control of the whole team.

Using performance enhancing drugs is cheating, not only should they be fined and suspended, but the team should have an option to renegotiate their contract and they should forfeit their guaranteed money.

Gambling while managing or playing Baseball cannot be tolerated.
I admit I have no love for Pete Rose. His arrogance in an All Star game broke the neck of a catcher, and he never expressed a word of regret about it.

@ucme . . . brits aren’t allowed to comment on american baseball. save the quips for all those ‘roid raging cricketeers in your country that are ruining what was once a pure and noble sport.

@Blondesjon You think I made a quip? That was some mild shit aimed at the doped up cheating fuckers referenced in the question.
A quip would had seem me pissing myself laughing at the pussies playing rounders, a little girl’s game & calling it a “world’ series.
As for cricket, can’t stand it, played by posh bastards with a private education behind them, so toss as much crap as you like at it.

@ucme . . . I dearly want to but I’ve always had a personal rule about not making fun of things I don’t understand and, my friend, I don’t understand cricket.

Funny thing about baseball is that for the last thirty years I haven’t given two shits for it and was often quite vocal about how fucking boring and pointless it was. I’m an American football fan.

Flash forward to this spring and summer when my 9 year old daughter began playing softball and showed a strong natural talent for it. Now we drive everybody else in the house crazy because we have games on nearly seven days a week. I can’t explain it. It’s like I’m twelve again and haven’t yet realized what a bunch of millionaire athletes are really like.

For the record my daughter is a Chicago Cubs fan and I, of course, love the Milwaukee Brewers.

As far the OP’s fine question goes I would have to say that I’m on the fence on this one. Rules are rules are rules are rules. With that said will somebody please just let Pete Rose in the fucking Hall Of Fame. He was a great player and bad person. He should fit right in.

@Blondesjon I’m with you til the wheels come off when it comes to our kids taking up sports.
My daughter plays in goal for her school team & you better believe i’m the sucker shouting the loudest from the touchline & cheering her on, most times she flashes me that “Dad, quit already” look, which tones me down…a bit.
My son just recently took up chess & kicks my arse every single game, but if it’s good enough for him, then i’m in too.
