If you have rented a car at the Orlando airport, which company did you use? How was your experience? Would you recommend them?

This question is specifically about car rental at the Orlando airport. I have traveled a great deal in the past and have had different experiences with different companies in different cities. I know to not get the extra insurance or the toll pass, and I’m taking my own GPS and maps. I know how to say no to those things, and to carefully read anything before I sign it. As well, I know to look carefully at the car, record any damage – even with a photograph – so that’s not an issue for me. I also know to not rent on price alone.
I’m asking specifically about your experience with car rental companies at that airport. I’ve read many reviews and they are all over the place. So jellies, who have you used there and would you do it again?

Don’t get the insurance if you are sure your car insurance covers you for rental cars. Otherwise, you do need the insurance.
I’ll send you Q to jellies who have vacationed in Orlando this summer.
I have used Hertz and National. Both were fine.
Been to Orlando several times, used Avis and Hertz. Holiday weeks with schools out mean there may be little or no cars to rent. Get a reservation, if you are a member of one of their rental member groups rent with that number. Make sure to bring your member card (got a vehicle first when there were twenty people waiting, by showing the card and only four cars in gas up area). Decline all insurance and rent the car with a credit card with a Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance. If you use Priceline or or one of the discount rental agents be prepared to get to the back of the line and you will not get a free upgrade.
@JLeslie – That’s why I said that I know I don’t need the insurance. Between my own car insurance and the credit card that I will use, I am covered. And thank you for forwarding my question!
@marinelife – Thank you. My Hertz experience has always been good. Good to know about a positive vote for National, too.
@Tropical_Willie – Seems to be another vote for Hertz, and now one for Avis. Yes, I’m aware that I need a reservation, to decline the insurance, to use an appropriate card and that belonging to their rental group will save time. Thank you for the heads-up about using a discount travel service. I hadn’t planned to, but now I know not to.
@tedibear – I’ve had both Hertz and Avis in Orlando. I would, however, encourage you to get the in-car Toll Pass. There are a lot of new toll-roads in Orlando. If you haven’t been there for a while you’ll be surprised at how many there are – and how much time you can save with the E-Z-Pass in the car. Unless you have your own & are bringing it to put in the vehicle I think it’d be worthwhile to request it in the rental.
@tedibear Just double checking, I see people write, “don’t take the insurance,” as advice, but they make assumptions the people have insurance, not everyone has car insurance, and even if people do have insurance they may not have coverage for car rentals. Some people will just risk it.
I find it interesting so many recommend Hertz, in Florida I almost always use Budget, Alamo, or Dollar. But, I have never rented out of Orlando.
We live near Orlando and have always received great service and rates from Enterprise. Interestingly though, their weekly rates are much lower at the airport than if we just go around the corner to our local Enterprise location.
Regarding insurance, if your personal auto policy does not clearly indicate that you are covered while driving a rental vehicle, just give them a call first to be sure that you are. Many policies (like mine) will cover everything except the cost of the number of days which the rental car company loses in rental while their damaged car is being repaired….
I only deal with Enterprise. My nephew is a manager for Enterprise and they are wonderful to their employees and even before he worked for them, they are wonderful to people who rent from them. Just a tip, always ask if they can upgrade you for free. Sometimes, depending on what is available at the time you check in, you might be able to get an upgrade to a luzury car. it doesn’t hurt to ask.
