How much is the, "minimum wage" in San Francisco?
I understand the California minimum wage is 8.00$ but my buddy from SF says non degree jobs like being a barista pay like 14$ minimum per hour.

Not only that, you get medical benefits if you work full time, even if it is a minimum wage job.
Not enough. It should be $100 per hour. What are those politicians waiting for?!
Look at the rents and you’ll see that $10.55 isn’t shit. In fact, that is part of the reason the minimum wage in SF is higher than the CA minimum wage.
Ignore the dollar amounts and look at what you get. Median rent for a 2-bedroom in my area (the Seattle metroplex) is $975, slightly higher than the $969 average where I used to live in NH. In San Fran…. well, closer to $2700–3000. Oakland is more reasonable at closer to $1850.
So, how does that high minimum wage sound now?
Ironically, many who are against a higher minimum wage live where you are getting ripped off if you are paying $700 for a 3-bedroom in the ritziest neighborhood in town, bu t that’s a separate discussion.
Wow. 10.55. And it’s unemployment rate is like 4% lower than the State as a whole, which is 8.00.
It as if raising the minimum wage actually spurs demand, and everything I have been told about how regulations hurt job creation is a a complete fantasy without a basis in fact.
@jerv Most people I know (in sf) that work with non degree required jobs roommate it up. And I know about 7 people who currently do this system. One even does barista and can afford 2000$ rent on a 2 bedroom. So it must be good, “shit” as you put it.
I like the point you make in the latter section of your answer
When the heck did SF get so pricey anywho? I mean, right after industrialization?
My point was that the higher minimum wage in SF isn’t even close to enough to live in a single-income household while it’s remotely possibly around Seattle, and easily doable in the South/Midwest.
A good barista will earn enough tips to possibly pull it off, but $14/hr * 40 hours/week * 4 weeks/month equals only $2240/month gross, so it definitely isn’t possible on just the wages.
@jerv I stand corrected.
This is what one of my buds said, ”...that as a shit poor musician that no one has ever heard of, I did live here with my own bedroom in a 2 bedroom, with healthcare, and my bills paid with a 20 hour barista job and a local show a month”
So it was “A” room…
I think @jerv has it. The cost of living in SF is high, and the minimum wage has to compensate for that but it is still by no means a livable wage.
Even if you go out into East bay and the suburban cities as far out as Concord you are running into fairly high cost of living. A 1Br/Ba apartment in a area that may not be nice but where you won’t get stabbed is around $1350/month, while my apartment here in a large SoCal city 45 minutes east of la is only 875/mo. And while Safeway/Vons down here is a more of a high end supermarket, in the bay area it is completely dominant and ubiquitous and the prices aren’t any more forgiving.
So I don’t think they really are any better off even if they are getting more than $10/hr.
If I recall correctly, doesn’t starbucks give benefits to their employees even if they are PT?
