Is there a way to figure out how much weight resistance bands offer?

Asked by Pandora (32398points) July 31st, 2013

I been doing an exercise routine that requires using bands at a gym with weights attached. Currently I don’t have a gym membership and so I have been trying to keep up my workouts at home.
I’ve been doing side leg lifts with resistance bands and by extending the band I can make the resistance less or more by shortening it.
So I was wondering if there is a way to calculate exactly how much weight I am using?

I don’t think that is a possibility.

Are you looking to lose weight, tone, gain flexibility, or strength train? It doesn’t matter what weight you are using as long as you are doing the exercise in a fashion that will get you toward your goal.

@mambo I am looking to tone and gain strength. I figured there wasn’t a way but I was hoping some genius in fluther may actually have an answer. It was worth a shot.

@Pandora Well, the best you can do is just pay attention to how it feels. The feeling at you get from the resistance bands is far more important than the actual weight.

To tone and strengthen, you should do short burst sets. The first few sets should not be very complicated and serve as a warm up. Once you get into it, it should become increasingly challenging, but not out of your comfort zone.

I don’t know if you already knew this or not, but I figured I’d provide at least a little helpful info.

Put a bathroom scale on a couple of bricks or anything that will raise it up a little bit but still allow it to be as stable as if it was on a flat hard surface. Put the band under the scale. Weigh yourself. Then grab the handles on the band and stand up and start putting tension on the band. Your weight on the scale will go up according to the resistance on the band. But with bands the weight is variable depending on the tension. You go from nothing to maximum depending on how far you can stretch it.

@josie, And a genius is born. Thanks!
God! I love fluther.

:( I tried it and it didn’t work. I think it is because the band presses against the bottom of the scale. Maybe its because I have a digital scale.

Google ‘hanging luggage scale’ here is one result. They come in different weight ranges.
