What if biopsy is not an option?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29220points) July 31st, 2013

My girlfriend’s mom was suppose to have a growth in her lungs biopsied but didn’t happen after doctors deem it too risky. Have you heard of a similar case and what the doctors ended up doing to find out if the growth was benign or malignant-?

This exact same thing happened to my mom. Because of her health, they couldn’t do a biopsy, so they did radiation anyway to remove the spot. The radiation therapy was only 5 sessions and was sucessful.

Has she had a PET scan yet? Usually a PET scan can show if it’s malignant or not.

I say usually because my PET scan revealed that the spot on my lung was most likely malignant, but then the biopsy revealed that it was benign.

Oh I had forgotten that part. @jonsblond is right, they did a PET scan on my mom before the radiation.

Lung biopsies are not fun.

Thanks jellies. Very helpful answers. She was scanned but I don’t know what kind. Cat or Pet scan-? Don’t know the difference. Will find out.

Here’s info about PET scans. Radioactive material is given through an IV and any malignancy or disease will light up in the scan. This is how it was explained to me before I had mine.

A PET will be done after a Cat scan. If she’s only had one scan so far, it was probably the Cat scan.

This is a scary time for her. I’m so sorry.
