Do you eat to live or do you live to eat?

Asked by Drush545 (229points) July 31st, 2013

I love to eat. Its probably my favorite past time. I like to eat large amounts of really good food too and I must say that it shows.

With or without lots of alcohol?

I eat to live, and carefully at that. I’m a type II diabetic so I’m on a restrictive diet so it’s a bum deal for the most part. There are so many things I want to eat but can’t and even in moderation, I have to eat less of what I really like to, and am able to, at each meal.

As a recent graduate, I usually ate to live. Due to finances and poor time management, I was not eating very well at all. What little nourishment I had was so that I could stay stay alert. Still poor after graduating, but I am eating better now!

Although I do love a wonderfully cooked meal, food is not the main thing I live for.

I really love the full-sensory pleasure of good food.

I really hate bad food, so sometimes I eat to live. Especially at work, where the cafeteria food is atrocious, I’ll go with string cheese and goldfish crackers just to get me through the night.

I’ve been known to close my eyes while eating.

Now I’m hungry.

I live to eat, and drink. I love food, I love good food even better. Fortunately I have inherited my dad’s metabolism and the ability to eat what I like and still remain in good shape.

A little of both. If I skip more than one meal, I will grab at anything to eat and bring my energy level back up. My sugar takes a dive whenever I skip more than one meal.
But late at night, I have been known to get a cup of chocolate and just enjoy the moment. I try to eat it as slow as possible but the damn thing keeps melting quickly on me.

I live to eat. I love food and cooking. Too much sadly.

I can’t stand that “eat to live” saying.

I love food. I like healthy and unhealthy foods. I don’t “live to eat,” but I don’t eat for the sole purpose of surviving either. I enjoy the food I eat, but I also watch what I eat to maintain/improve my health and fitness level.

I enjoy eating nice food but I certainly don’t live for it and I wouldn’t consider it a hobby. I don’t eat a lot in one sitting regardless of how hungry I was before starting.

My bike club’s motto (many of us are gourmands):

Eat to Ride, Ride to Eat

I enjoy my food, but I primarily eat to live.

El_Cadejo's avatar

A bit of both. I’m a total food junkie and can appreciate a really good meal but I also have a really weird appetite and sometimes won’t eat anything for ~12 hours and only really eat when I realize how much my body actually needs food at that point in order to keep functioning.

I live to talk about food.

gondwanalon's avatar

I’ll eat just about anything. Week old leftovers or whatever is put before me just to fill my belly. I just don’t care what it is. So it looks like I eat to live.

It is a good thing that my wife is a dietitian. HA!

Eat to live. Eating is SUCH a hassle.

Paradox25's avatar

Live to eat. I enjoy beautiful colors and art because of my sense of sight. I enjoy music and beautiful sounds due to my sense of hearing. I enjoy pleasants smells, pleasant sensations due to touch, so why would I not enjoy satisfying my taste buds? I love eating, and I love to talk about food.

Sunny2's avatar

Both, with a lean toward live to eat. I love good things to eat, but I don’t have to have them. I can eat just because I have to and not care it isn’t scrumptious.

@Paradox25 Replace the word sex, with the word food in This Video, then you and me can sing it baby!

I’m on an alkaline, gluten free, and coffee free diet now. Not so tasty, but it fills me up and I’m healthier, and lost 30 lbs. But before I started eating like this, I lived for food. Now not so much.

gailcalled's avatar

What does “alkaline-free” mean? What would be a typical day’s menu?

snowberry's avatar

@gailcalled no, not alkaline free, I am on an alkaline diet. Essentially I eat lots and lots and lots of vegetables, some gluten free grains, and one small serving of wild meat a day.

What it is: http://www.acidalkalinediet.com/Alkaline-Foods-Chart.htm Alkaline foods are the ones in green bubbles. (Scroll toward the end of the list to see them.)
Its benefits: http://www.acidalkalinediet.com/alkaline-diet-benefits#.UjPWAszn9ok
I am also gluten free, and no coffee. I assume you know what a gluten free diet is already.

@Kardamom Well my homegrown peppers (sweet or hot) in oil with onions, my hunky salsa and my homemade jarred spaghetti sauce is something to die for, lol. I’m so glad that I’d learnt to cook when I was little.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Paradox25 I’d like to order 3 jars please.

Paradox25's avatar

@Duchess I’m redoing my kitchen right now, so it’ll have to wait :)

Sigh* **

Yes, @gailcalled. I’m under the careful scrutiny of a doctor, an MD for all this. My health has vastly improved, as I mentioned before, and I even feel better. Nobody’s pushing this diet on you, so relax already.

gailcalled's avatar

^^ What’s with all the signing and the defensive posture? The conclusion reached in the link I posted read ” ’The alkaline diet is basically healthy,’ says Marjorie Nolan, RD, an American Dietetic Association spokeswoman.’ ”

I just had the most amazing New York steak, with an awesome bottle of wine. Life is good.

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^^ mmmmm! Did they find it odd that you wanted your steak in a hamburger bun @SammichBob?
