Abortion: what's with all the controversy?

Asked by this_velvet_glove (1142points) August 3rd, 2013

So, I was reading Stephen King’s Insomnia (awesome, great, yaaay) and started thinking about it. What’s the big deal?

Some people believe that abortion ends a tiny possible life and that possibility should be treated as a person.

Some believe people should be in control of their own bodies and decisions related to family should be made by the people involved.

Both positions make sense and are exclusive of the other, so there’s controversy.

Some people believe that life begins at conception and are against murdering it. Some people don’t believe that, but still have a line they draw. They might think it is ok to abort the first three months, or the first 5 months, opinions differ.

Some believe bringing a baby into the world when you can’t support it emotionally or financially isn’t fair to the baby or society, others believe a life is a life, and we must always let it be born.

Many argue it should be a private matter for the woman, and she should have control over her body. I say, all people should have control over their bodies and just like the government can’t force me to donate blood or my kidney to say another human being, it should not be able to firce me to give my body, iron in my blood, kidney function, increased stress on my hearts, other possible health problems, to support a fetus.

Another issue, is it ok to abort a baby that has genetic problems, but would otherwise grow to term?

It is about control.
Conservatives want to control women’s bodies, and liberals want women to have control of their own bodies.
All this talk about the right of the unborn is just a front.

Because abortion is MURDER!!~

@this_velvet_glove: Did you not understand the controversy or did you want to start a discussion about people’s opinions on this matter?

Ah, murder. That grandest of human pastimes. We have come up with some pretty inventive ways to accomplish this over the years haven’t we? Why pick on this one method to vent your anger toward?

Controversy? I must have missed that. Maybe I was in the shower.

There are ethical dilemmas.

The whole thing is based on ‘When does life begin’. If it’s a human life and you kill it, that’s murder and illegal. If it’s not a human life, you can kill or discard it just like any other parasite. We disagree on when life begins.

Like most controversies we use inflamatory language and argue from the extremes. Hell, the human brain is not fully formed until the age of 25. Can you abort until then? What magic occurs when a sperm enters the egg that makes that an indivual life? I doubt we’ll ever come to grips with these varying and emotionally charged opinions. Should we accept backalley, coat hanger abotions or allow sticking an icepick in the head of the baby in the delivery room. Pretty hard to reconcile these two extremes.

It’s not as big a controversy everywhere as it is in USA. Unfortunately these’s also a lot of places where it’s not even debatable that abortion should be legal.

Because women should be able to kill their children if they want to, right? I mean, technically they are part of you, they came from your body, they wouldn’t exist without you, so it’s your choice if you want to kill them at any stage of their life, does it really matter how old they are? Fuck no, it’s your choice.

Seems pretty legit

@jca I wanted the opinions :p

Well, being careful, is much wiser than killing anything. But accidents happen. I believe that it’s better to kill your possible child, rather than bring it here and force it to live with parents who didn’t intend to have kids, and secretly (sometimes not) hate it for making their life miserable. Also, having a child and then give it to another family wouldn’t be a choice for me, since I’d always wonder ‘where is he/she, what’s he/she doing’. It’s all about what the woman wants. If she wants to keep her baby and become a real mother, that’s very good. But if she doesn’t, then… why not? Abortion makes sense then. And what if a woman gets raped? Noone has the right to force a woman to keep her child, if she’s determined not to do so.

Human=worst animal ever. really. We kill each other every day. War, racism, stupid psycho religions (sue me!), braindead governments, suicides… and more nice stuff, of course.

I almost never watch the news… Makes me angry

@this_velvet_glove killing a child so you don’t have to wonder where they are or what they are doing…...Nice.

i meant that it’s easier to destroy someone once, than do so twice.

cheebdragon's avatar

I wasn’t aware people had a second life..

cheebdragon's avatar

I knew what you meant, however there truly are no words to describe how incredibly ignorant and disgusting it sounds to say “it’s better to destroy someone once than do so twice” while trying to defend the right to destroy a child. It’s probably best for abortion to be legal, because fuck if that’s the kind of person who should ever be allowed near children.

(not a personal attack, just in general)
