Why do I sleep do much?

I don’t understand how I sleep so much. I mean I’m always the first one to fall asleep, anywhere anytime. I could fall asleep at a party like I could fall asleep at work. Worst is when I drive sometimes I tried to control myself to not sleep but minutes later I found myself falling asleep :S . I know people get tired but I and everyone around think it might be more. I tried coming up with explanation as to why I was falling asleep and here’s the only one i could think of; when I was really depressed last winter I would make/force myself to sleep. I could sleep all day (waking up here and there) but I would always force myself to sleep again. Do you think this is the reason why ? Even now when I’m bored or something my eyes tend to automatically close o_O

Often people who are depressed retreat into sleep and/or have erratic sleep patterns.
Or there is a medical reason and you need to discuss this with your doctor and not us. I am sorry you have so many miseries but you really won’t find your answers here.
Could be something you need to address with your doctor if you feel it is excessive.
FWIW I have been sleeping about 9 hrs a night for the past week and a half which doesn’t sound unusual unless you know I usually operate on about 6 hrs sleep. Why? Not sure. Not much has changed. Have started exercising a LITTLE more, not enough to increase my sleep need by 50% but that is just my opinion. Maybe it is.
It could be due to your depression. It could be because of a terrible mattress. It could be something medical.
You should go and talk to your doctor after you compile a sleep schedule and a day time sleepiness chart.
You could be narcoleptic, or something similar. Is it just that you fall asleep very easily and fast? Or, do you actually sleep a lot of hours every day?
If you are only sleeping a short time at night, you are falling asleep everywhere, because your body is trying to grab sleep whenever it can.
Or, it could be depression, thyroid problems, if you are a teenager it can just be that you are a teenager. Teens need a lot of sleep.
The thyroid is easily tested with a blood test. Hypothyroid can help cause depression. It can make you low energy, low desire to do anything. It can increase your need for sleep significantly.
You could also do a sleep study if they run basic blood tests and find nothing wrong.
Do you drink caffeine?
@JLeslie and the other jellies said it all perfectly and because I suffer from this too, could you perhaps be slightly overweight? If you are depressed it is certainly the reason, as well as over-thinking and over-analyzing things which leads to mental burn-out. Get yourself out in the sun and fresh air a bit more I totally know the feeling because one feels that he is sleeping his life away! Multi vitamins????
I usually sleep arounf 10–12am and wake up around 7–8
@JLeslie I dont sleep a lot of hours everyday, just at night, the most i would do is take a nap if I’m home ( before I used to take lots of naps but I thought it was one of the causes so i cut it down a bit) On my next doctor’s appointment I’m going to mention it. The first time I did tell it to my doctor she said that’s it’s normal every young adults tend to do that… ? which I don’t have any of my friends dealing with this!
No I don’t drink caffeine, rarely I’ll take a cup of coffee but I mainly drink tea ( tea has caffeine too in it but less)..
@ZEPHYRA No, I’m not overweight(I’m tall and slim), But I do over think and over analyze things a lot. Yea ! totally like I’m always missing out on things because I feel tired and as soon as I do my eyes close automatically-_- . .. How about your situation ?
So you sleep 9–10 hours in a 24 hour period? Or, more than that? It might be 7.5 hours at night and then 1.5 hour nap. If you are only sleeping from mindnight to 7:00am it’s not surprising at all you are exhausted and fall asleep when you get a chance. Very normal for a teen.
Are you gettnig headaches?
When do you drink tea? All day? Do you always drink it the same time every day? When you wake up? Lunch? Dinner? Not usually when you wake up? You should see if you fall asleep in the middle of the day when you break your caffeine pattern.
I’m not discouraging you from telling your doctor, still worth doing it. Especially the simple thyroid test. He may have done it already if he did blood tests.
@JLeslie I sleep around 7 hours at night + 1hours and a half I count my naps. No I don’t get headaches anymore.
I drink tea around 7 am 2–4 times in the morning during the week and maybe 1 cup of tea in the afternoon at times (2times a week). Also when I eat, sometimes I would take a cup of tea before( 3–4 times a week)
@Mp123 8–10 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period is very normal for a teenager, you’re a teen right?
Caffeine’s two biggest symptoms when you withdraw are sleepiness and headaches. You could see if you fall asleep when you miss your usual caffeine hit. If you don’t drink caffeine regularly, then your lack of pattern means you get low on caffeine somes probably. Caffeine drinkers will say it doesn’t affect them, they can drink tea and go right to sleep not problem. That is true fir people who drink a lot of caffeine, but what is also true is when they don’t drink it they start to feel like crap and start falling asleep everywhere.
But, I am not saying drink more caffeine, just suggesting it as a reason for your uncontrollable sudden need to nod off. But, for sure the biggest reason you probably get tired is because you sleep less than 8 hours a night, which is very little for someone your age.
@JLeslie Noooooo, I wasn’t referring to you, I was simply agreeing with all you said! Ooooh, I hope I didn’t upset you!
@ZEPHYRA Not upset, just wasn’t sure what you meant, now I understand.
@JLeslie I’m 20 years old… You’re probably right! I for sure need to get at least 8 hours of sleep !
It could be due to your depression.
It could also be narcolepsy. My mom and my aunt both have it. They’re always tired, fall asleep at the drop of a hat.
I think thyroid was already mentioned, it could very well be that too.
can anyone help me with my questions??
@Amo101
I think they are. What else are you looking for, other than a place to start? Bottom line, you’ll have to eliminate the possibilities one by one. Start with a doctor, and work from there.
Sure, you got questions. we got answers.
now if we can just match them up
