Do you think one can survive with a non paying job?

Asked by Mp123 (317points) August 7th, 2013

I’m looking to enlighten kids, young adults and adults. But obviously it’s the type of thing that if you want to do, you’re not getting paid. I don’t mind that but I have to travel all around in order to do so. Do you think there’s a way to live without getting paid :S ?

Years ago, there was a government program called VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). I don’t know if the program still exists. It was sort of a home-based Peace Corps; all the assignments were within the U.S. borders. Participants had their housing and other basic living needs covered, and they may have received small stipends, but they did volunteer their services.

If you have any background in medical care, counseling, dentistry, or nutrition, The U.S. Public Health Service and Indian Health Service offer similar opportunities. My cousin, a kind-hearted dentist, volunteers for IHS for a few weeks every year. He doesn’t get paid wages or a salary, but IHS covers his travel and expenses during those weeks.

How are you planning to ‘enlighten’ them? Religiously? If yes maybe your church will help sponsor you. It can be a Mission.
Do not go without being prepared to cover your own expenses.

Please be clear that you are presenting your own beliefs or those of your organization.

Can you give us a bit more detail? It sounds like you are going to be a missionary panhandler.

@SadieMartinPaul Thank you ! I will look into it. I don’t have any background in medical, dentistry or nutrition. If I can say that working for a Youth Organization (I was a counselor for a camp for 3–4years) could be considered as couseling then I have that…

@LuckyGuy Going without being prepared would be like a pre known fail :/ That’s why I would really like to be organized before considering anything..

I would like to speak with community, churchs, school students, young adult, the ymca etc. I targeting black people mainly because they have a lot of issues that needs to be fix( self issues, identity, trust, etc. ) I would like to break their way of thinking and help them find goals and achieve them. Especially kids and young adults. Of course there’s other kids(different nationalities) that need help too and I’m open to invite them and help them. I know Brooklyn is mainly Mexicans and Black population so I’m willing to help them both.

@Mp123 It sounds like you are going into the wilderness with a pre-conceived idea of the geography, and no real idea of the true nature of the place. Please be careful making statements like targeting black people mainly because they have a lot of issues that needs to be fix( self issues, identity, trust, etc. ) I would like to break their way of thinking and help them find goals and achieve them.

Unless you are in a position of experience to show that you can identify such issues and address them appropriately, not only will you fail, but you are making an arrogant assumption of being superior to others.

You can’t make a ‘living’ from a job with no salary. In this case this is called volunteering.

Just to be clear, camp counselor =/= counseling experience.

I’m not sure if you’re inexperienced and altruistic or condescending and arrogant. I’ll hope for the former.

You have to have food and shelter. You either have to have money to pay for food and shelter or have it provided for you.

It sounds like you would like to be a public/motivational speaker. Is that correct? What combination of training or education and life experience do you bring to the table? What do you have to offer to others? You have to be some kind of expert to make a living traveling and speaking to groups of people. What is your expertise? Or, perhaps, what would you like your expertise to be? And why do you think you will not be paid?

Seriously:
1. How old are you?
2. Where are you from?
3. What education/training/experience do you have?
4. Is this religiously motivated?
5. Why wouldn’t you be getting paid for your work?

No, unless generous people give you food and shelter for free.

And a general “no” to your comments, too. Is this a joke?

antimatter's avatar

Nope, fuel and rental don’t come for free.

In the 1960’s we used to be able to do that sort of thing. I did volunteer work at a hippie restaurant in exchange for meals and slept in a community hostel, after the commune I had been living in broke up.

My mom’s family left Oklahoma in the 1930’s and traveled through New Mexico and Colorado as itinerant preachers, getting paid by various churches. I doubt you would find much of that any more.

josie's avatar

Sure.

You simply need to tap into the income of people who get paid for actually producing something.

It is practically a political cottage industry in the USA.

@zenvelo I’m sorry if my comment touched you but I did not try to be arrogant or I don’t see what I wrote that made you think I feel superior to others. Can you please explain ? It wasn’t my intention.

@LornaLove Yea I thought about that too, I misused my words. Sorry.

@Cupcake Yea I think that’s what I want to be a public motivational speaker. As for trainning I have some trainning experience and I’ve done some workshops how to deal with different characters, handle differents situations etc. I’ve been working in the human ressources for 2 years now and I could say that I have a good experience with people.

I spoke with an expert in the States that takes care of communities and projects for unfortunate people and he thought I great plan and gave me some tips to help me achieve it. I just started so for experience I have a very little experience. I have done some discussion with groups that went very well. I think I wouldn’t get paid because I want to help out, and open people’s mind about things and no one would really invest in helping the less fortunate.

1.20 years old
2.Canada/montreal
3.College Degree after I took a break and I’ve been working in human ressources for 2years
4. Not it’s not religiously motived

@WillWorkForChocolate what do you mean is that a joke? what are you talking about ?

@josie how would I do that?

zenvelo's avatar

@Mp123 You profess to be able to tell others how to improve their lives, but you have no idea or education or experience with what their lives consist of. That is basic arrogance and superiority in thinking you know more than others about their lives.

Mp123's avatar

No I said that all I wanted to do was talk to people and see what are their image of black people and what do they think of themselves and if it’s negative to open their minds to see the positive and think better of themselves. I’m not going there assuming anything of generalizing anything. I said that most blacks people have self issues and are dealing with issues in real life. Some of these issues could be fixed in time only by seeing the good of the bad they think and discussing it. Being black myself allows me to say that because I at time could relate to the main feelings or ways of thinking I think almost everyone has. I did not say that because I woke up thinking oh maybe that the way they feel, No I have felt that way too and had had group discussion where most of the people could relate to them too. I’m not looking to start fighting or anything @zenvelo

@Mp123 Well there you go… that’s the life experience I was asking about. You’ve had certain beliefs/attitudes/feelings and you’ve worked to overcome them.

You might want to look into some urban non-profit agencies for employment.

@Cupcake Thank you I will :)

For everyone : I hope what i asked and answered didn’t offend anyone :(

You’re going to be living on charity, basically. Look for grants. Contact any relevant special-interest organizations, see if they’re interested. Find donors and people willing to throw $50 your way every month. See about living with someone in exchange for work, that sort of thing.

Our own @Incendiary_Dan is a modern-day hunter-gatherer, whose only expenses are the clothes on his back and possibly the roof over his head. I believe he teaches a course in that sort of thing.
