What's on your kitchen window sill?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) August 7th, 2013

I have pine cones (presented to me by grandchildren, ergo, they are very precious to me) ‘pecial rocks (ditto on the rocks) and sea shells and a vintage “CHAMBERLAIN’S COLIC, CHOLERA AND DIARRHEA REMEDY” bottle that I found out at the land. (That pic is off ebay, but that’s what my bottle looks like.)

What on YOUR window sill?

Nowt, only one wee window in our kitchen, pointless bothering putting anything on there.

Russian nesting doll figures.

A wooden loon I bought on one of our vacations in northern Wisconsin. I also have a wooden duck that was a Christmas present from my daughter and a wooden block that is painted with a butterfly and the saying “Happiness is having you for my mom”. That was also a present from my daughter.

A vase with roses and carnations in, in the middle, 2 fancy cups either side in height order. Then at each end i have a male and female rabbit which were my mums grandmothers.

Nada.

ucme's avatar

Oh wait, now there’s a fucking huge wasp on the sill…ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

PUT HIM IN A BABY FOOD JAR AND PUT THE JAR IN THE FREEZER! Tomorrow put the jar back out on the window sill.

I’m now upstairs cowering behind a locked bathroom door, let the wife deal with it…it’s better that way.

If you play it right, you. *wink

ucme's avatar

When it comes to wasps, absolutely I am, I loathe the little bastards.

Headhurts's avatar

@gailcalled I think you are in trouble. That is one serious frown. He’s going to get you back for that.

I’ve got a Pepper plant, a Basil plant, an Orchid, a book and a hairbrush that isn’t mine and I’m not sure who it belongs to.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I wondered where my hairbrush went!

Ucme, I was stung by a wasp two days ago. It’s only the second sting of my lifetime, the first occurring a mere 50 years ago. The bastard was hiding in a hand towel and stung me on the palm of my left hand. It burned like bloody hell for 15 minutes, ached like bloody hell for another half hour and then . . . poof . . . it’s like it didn’t happen.

ucme's avatar

It’s not so much the sting @picante, although clearly that plays a part in my fear/hatred.
I just go into a cold sweat at the mere sight or even sound of them, always been that way.
Was only stung once by a bee, right on the back of my neck, the pain was only brief & not too bad really, so I kind of no what to expect.

Headhurts's avatar

@ucme How about spiders?

LornaLove's avatar

I did have some herbs but they all died for some reason. I guess I’m not very good with plants :(.

I’ve got candles and two decorative tiles there now.

ucme's avatar

@Headhurts I’m fine with spiders, don’t bother me at all. I mean, we don’t have the dangerous ones over here do we? Black Widows/Funnel Web/Redback, can’t say i’d be thrilled to meet up with a bloody Tarantula either, but general house spiders are okay.

Headhurts's avatar

@ucme At least you not scared of them. It’s ok to be scared of wasps, but men can’t be scared of spiders.

ucme's avatar

Ha, I know a few who are, although I don’t think phobias are a laughing matter.

Headhurts's avatar

Me neither. I’m petrified.

LuckyGuy's avatar

Oh man.. you are going to wonder about me. Here goes…
a pair of binoculars, 8×42
a standard red laser pointer. 0.5 mW
a high power green laser >1 mW
a right angle prism
2 small wood blocks
One ceramic block
and a Lego guy

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! Are you single by any chance, @LuckyGuy? And WHO lives across the street? :)

Headhurts's avatar

@Dutchess_III I was just going to ask about the lady across the road!

LuckyGuy's avatar

I’m married with two grown ‘kids” – both out of the house. Only their junk is left behind.
I have no (human) neighbors out in that direction. Just birds and critters. One of the storm windows is permanently propped open at 5” so I can readily stick my Nikon D3200 telephoto out and take pictures. (I post them on FB every now and then. Take a look.)
The lasers are used to ‘dissuade’ critters rather than using higher power devices.
Rest assured, squirrels do not bother my bird feeders nor the bluebirds who nest back there.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I am so relieved! Yes, I’ve seen your pictures on fb. They are awesome. I keep trying to snag a picture of a deer for you, but this is all I can ever come up with. Know this, @LuckyGuy, whenever I see one of those unique critters I think of you (which means I think of you about 50 times a day! Don’t tell my husband!)

livelaughlove21's avatar

Resting on my windowsill is nothing but the bottom of my drapes.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I just hollad at you on fb @LuckyGuy. :)

LuckyGuy's avatar

Shhh… We’ll keep it our secret.
It’s nice to know people actually see those pictures.
In case anyone is wondering the wood and ceramic blocks are spacers and rests for supporting and aiming the camera. Mystery solved.

I have been agonizing for two days over house floor plans and insisting I want a window in my kitchen. So many builders put the kitchen in the middle of the house. Just seeing all these answers makes me feel better about wanting a window.

Headhurts's avatar

@JLeslie We spend too much time in the kitchen to not have a window.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No no. You must have a window in your kitchen!!

jonsblond's avatar

@JLeslie We lived with a tiny galley kitchen with no window for 16 years. Never again will I live without a window in a kitchen. It was so dark and miserable in there. I spend so much of my time in the kitchen, it just made that time depressing,.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@JLeslie Do you like living in a submarine? Insist on a window.

JLeslie's avatar

@LuckyGuy The kitchen has to be by an outside wall to even think about the window. Many of the floorplans now have a window by the breakfast table, but I want it where the sink is or some other counter. Maybe some people count a window in the kitchen table nook as a kitchen window.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@JLeslie Oh… You must be talking about a house that has rooms without an outside wall; a house with a large floor plan; something like >3000 sq ft.
Would you consider a skylight or two in the south facing roof?

My personal preference is to be able to look outside. I don’t like inside rooms unless they are for storage. (That is why we have basements here.)

Dutchess_III's avatar

You need a kitchen window over the sink so that as you are washing dishes you can look out and see your kid at the moment he starts to bleed due to the stupid crash he got into again in the yard.

downtide's avatar

My kitchen doesn’t even have a window.

Kardamom's avatar

2 African violets.

JLeslie's avatar

@LuckyGuy I care about being able to look out so a skylight doesn’t help. Plus, it’s FL, I don’t even understand when people do get skylights here. I just think of it as adding to the air conditioning bill. Maybe on the northside of the house it wouldn’t add a ton of heat while letting in light? Doesn’t matter, skylight isn’t what I would be looking for. The house will be right about 3,000 sq ft. My houses that have been bigger usually have that kitchen in the middle floorplan and I don’t like it. The other popular floorplan here is to have the kitchen at the side of the house, and then the kitchen table is to the back of the house immediately adjacent. I’m so confused about what I want.
