Are there some foods, that even though the expiration date is still off, you're a little leerie of eating it?
I bought cottage cheese last week. Had a bit. Went to open up the container today (still good for another week), and I couldn’t bring myself to eat it. The thought of it made me gag.

Well, cottage cheese makes me gag anyway.
But no, I tend to ignore “use by” dates entirely, and go by the evidence at hand.
Any kind of dairy and any meat that I’m not going to cook before I eat it.
Most all of them, better safe than sorry. Except milk, I love milk to the point of almost spoiled, weird I know.
Dairy products in general, especially milk.
I opened a can of peaches yesterday that smelled canny so I’m throwing them away.
Dang ya’ll, if it’s not curdled, milk is okay, come on! The tang is the THANG!
^^ I just threw up in my mouth a little. lol
I hate milk.
Use by dates are always at least a couple days after the date give. Same is true of medications, only with them the limit is at least a month longer. I used to help a medical Axillary pack them to be sent to Central America.
If it’s food and not furry, I’ll eat it. Burp! .
I do have one exception: I will gladly eat fuzzy peaches.
I’ll have to go with dairy products as well; I’ve had milk go bad days before the expiration date. I also bought bagels once and the day of the expiration, they were completely covered in mold. Which meant that I probably ate one with a little bit of mold on it…
Deli meats you can’t go by the expiration date once you open the package the most you will get is a week more, I tend to go with 5 days. Dairy like sour cream and I would think cttage cheese also, but I don’t ever buy it or eat it, would make me wnder after being open for a week and probably I would ditch it. Salad dressing that has been open for a couple months I want to throw out, but my husband thinks I am nuts, many condiments and spices I use even after years, depends on the thing.
I go by looks and smell not necessarily expiration dates because improper handling prior to you purchasing it can throw things off considerably.
If you had milk that spoiled before the expiration was up it means that the store (or the trucking company) allowed it to get way too warm for way too long.
Obviously it was re-chilled by the time you got it. But you really have no idea what went on before.
I’ve had the same thing happen with frozen food allowed to completely defrost and refrozen. Horrible.
I don’t look at expiration dates. Most of them I’ve found to be off. I just look at/smell the food or give it a little taste(if it’s something that’s ok to eat raw). When it comes to food though I live by the motto “when in doubt throw it out”
