When you are in the chair at the dentist, where do you look?

Asked by rojo (24179points) August 12th, 2013

I mean I don’t feel right looking up into the face of the hygienist or dentist while they are working on me. I would like to close my eyes but then I don’t know when to open my mouth and that light is extremely intense so I end up counting the holes in the ceiling tile. How about you? What do you do? Is there a proper etiquette for this? And if you are on the opposite side of this encounter, what do you prefer?

Nowhere, my eyes are closed – it’s usually a bit of a nightmare for me, as an experience.

I too shut my eyes. I trust my dentist and his hygienist and, except for clutching my hands together rather tightly, am quite relaxed. mostly

Ceiling!

Depends on which hygienist I get and whether she is wearing a low cut blouse.

I usually look at the light (not into the beam of light, but at the actual light itself).

The light, sometimes I even hear the voice of the little woman from the Poltergeist movie, “don’t go into the light Carol Anne!”

Directly and obviously at their crotch.

if i have to be uncomfortable they can be uncomfortable too . . .

My dentist provides dark goggles to wear, and I keep my eyes shut most of the time. In fact, I sort of nap while they work. They also provide ear phones with my choice of music.

Why don’t they mount a flat screen, securely, to the ceiling?

Eyes most definitely shut!
I had a root canal a couple of years ago and almost left when I got a look at their tray of torture!

Sometimes I pretend the dentist is saying “Is it safe?”
I’ve no fucking idea what he’s on about though.

@ucme . . . i had no idea that you were a long distance runner.

@Blondesjon They changed the name to Snickers, bastards!

Usually my eyes are closed. One dentist I had, had a TV in the room, but, you could not really watch it while he was working on your mouth, it was more for waiting for him to get there. But, you could listen to it.

My dentist puts beautiful pics on his ceiling, has a tv in the top left corner, and also gas is optional, so I always splurge on the extra $30 bucks and take a little nappy.

rojo's avatar

@KNOWITALL Can’t do gas, last time I tried it, many years ago, I was nauseous and vomiting for the rest of the day and swore I would suffer the pain rather than go through that again.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@rojo Oh man, that would suck, I’m a total baby when it comes to voluntary pain.

Just so you know, in my area, you can tell your dentist you’re nervous and they’ll give you a valium. My friend does it every time or she will throw up just from nerves.

My dentist gives me a little flexible heavily tinted eye shield to wear. I look up and see darkness.

Pachy's avatar

I keep my eyes closed and my trunk lowered.

My dentist has posters on the ceiling that I look at. In the corner of the room is a TV showing all the ways to fix teeth and I find that pretty interesting.

Usually closed. I’ve always liked going to the dentist and feel fairly at ease in the chair. I can sense when they are going to rinse or want me to change the angle of my head by their pauses and tend to open my eyes at about the right times. Then again, I haven’t had any major dental work done, so I’m just talking exams and the occasional filling. I think I’d like to be out for anything more.

My eyes are either closed or looking at the ceiling/light. I’m jealous, I wish the rooms at our dentist’s office had TVs in them!
