What does UPS do when a plane crashes and all the packages are destroyed?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33550points) August 14th, 2013

Re: the crash in Birmingham this morning.

I’m sure that UPS knows the tracking numbers and destination addresses for all of the stuff that was on board the plane. And possibly, to some degree, the contents of each package.

Does UPS phone each shipper/receiver? Do they wait for people to call in?

I figure that on a plane that size, there could have been 10,000 envelopes and packages. How do they get their hands around that big of a job?

They have a complete shipping manifest available through the tracking system. And I imagine they sent out automatic emails to the senders ASAP. I can get emails from UPS when something is delivered, I am sure UPS has protections built in.

10,000 pieces is really not that big. And they can pick up replacements and expedite shipping for replacements, all covered by business interruption insurance.

R.I. P. the pilot.

To be honest, I was concerned about the pilot and crew and really didn’t give much thought to people’s J.Crew and L.L.Bean purchases.
