My little man starts kindergarten on Tuesday, a mere three days after his fifth birthday!
His teacher has suggested I might bring some cookies or cupcakes into class on Wednesday, and E will have the first turn wearing the birthday crown!
But a box cake mix is no fun… So I’m tapping my squishies for ideas.
Whatcha got for me?

Bannock bread and pemmican
Beaver tails and elephant ears “both are pastries” I had the bannock for grade 1 I loved it.
Dinosaur poop cookies was a favorite of mine at that age…
I never used the recipe provided just used a quick Google search for the term, but it looks right
Can it be homemade? Most schools require store bought items for birthdays and parties these days.
Kindergartener Kabobs!
MMMMMM fat juicy Kindergarteners with alternating slices of Bell Peppers, Onions and Mushrooms. Maybe with a side of roast corn!
Or did I misinterpret the question?
Our school requires store bought only in their original container. We always take grapes or oranges.
Congratulations on having a kindergartener in the house :D
I always loved the worms and mud thing where all it’s made of is chocolate pudding, gummy worms and oreo crumbles.
Pretty good if you ask me and super easy to make.
I also was going to say most schools require store bought now. If you do buy something, I would get an assortment of at least two types of cookies, or two types of cupcakes. I would make sure one is no chocolate and no peanut.
On a practical note, I know you are tight for cash, if I were you I would not feel any obligation or guilt to bring something. My birthday was very often the first day back to school after winter break, and my sister was often the first day of school after summer break, or close to it, we never brought cookies or cupcakes with us. Every child with a July birthday does not feed the class.
@rojo That was bad, even for you.
For clarification, I’ve already confirmed homemade is fine, and it isn’t a peanut free classroom. Let the games begin!
Then I say something with sprinkles. Donuts, cupcakes, brownies, or cookies. Although, I always like a good rice krispie square. If the teacher allows a mess you could let the kids decorate the treat with sprinkles, cc bits, or m&m’s. But, that could get out of control.
Worms n Dirt
The kids can make them at their desks. Store bought Oreos and pudding packs and Dixie cups.
The extra hardened Jello cutouts. You’d have to Google the recipe.
I remember going to something and they let us decorate the cupcakes as a kid, it was like a homecoming fair. Anyways I remember thinking it was a blast! :)
In kindergarten I was given a juice box and apple slices . I loved snack time, and nap time.
@talljasperman hell i still love snack and nap time. They are just a much rarer occurance.
In my knidergarten we had old Mrs “Scooter” Sharp, and we didn’t get nap time. We also did math worksheets which were timed and weren’t allowed to color outside the lines. I miss those days.
When I had daycare, whenever a birthday came around, I’d drape plastic all over everything, then turn the kids loose with different colors of icing and sprinkles. They got amazing creative! And my kitchen got amazingly messy! And they, and I, loved it amazingly a lot. :)
This might be late but here goes. I’m a teacher and the one thing you need to be aware of before providing treats is allergies. Now while store bought stuff can be nice, there’s not always a guarantee that it will be free of allergens. Some kids are so severely allergic to nuts for example that the mere smell of them can send a kid into shock. Rice crispy treats have always been a personal favorite. You can spice em up by adding sprinkles or food coloring to the melted marshmallows :)

Although some places are allowed peanuts, I’d still steer clear. I’ve worked in schools that were so strict, staff couldn’t even have nuts in the staff room.
