Why is my blister so itchy?

Asked by Kairi (794points) August 16th, 2013

Thursday last week, I developed a blister from the shoes I was wearing on my pinky toe. It is almost the same size as my pinky toe. it appears to have popped because it is crusting over on one side, but it still looks all reddish and puffy like it did when I first got it. I know it’s healing, but it’s very itchy and I can’t scratch it. I’m using an antibiotic cream now (kind of like Neosporin) and it seems to help, but it flares up itchy all the time. I’ve looked it up online, but the things I find are STD related and viral infection related causes for the blisters. Any ideas?

Wounds often itch when they are healing. Or it’s getting infected. If it gets redder and more painful, you might want to peel that blister off, clean it up, and get some antibiotic ointment on it and a proper bandage.

Are you keeping a bandaid on it? You might be allergic to the bandaid, I am allergic to most of them. Is it possible the itch is from the antibiotic cream? Also, why are you using a cream? Your really should use and ointment.

If the red area increases or becomes more painful you might have an infection that need antibiotics. Watch for red streaks or swelling going up your foot, that is an emergency and you need to go to the doctor. But, if it seems to be healing, but just itching, hopefully it will feel better in just a few days. I know how annoying it is to have an itch on your foot, frustrating.

@snowberry yeah, I figured it was just healing, but it looks irritated

@JLeslie I don’t have a bandaid on it. It doesn’t itch when I do though. I just put the cream on and it stopped it. It’s like Neosporin, so I guess its more of an ointment then a cream

When I first saw this Q I thought you asked “Why is my sister so bitchy”.

Anyway, Itching is part of the healing process. Sometimes it helps to itch the area around the sore. Just don’t itch it directly.

Itching is very low grade pain, so take any analgesic you use, aspirin, Tylenol, etc. Should ease the itch. Keep it clean. You could also try anti-itch lotion.
