Could I catch this cold from my husband (see details)?
Hopefully, this question isn’t as stupid as it sounds.
I had a cold last week. It began with a sore throat Sunday, sneezing/runny nose Monday through Wednesday, horrible chest congestion Thursday, bad cough Friday. Today I’ve got a bit of the sniffles and a little cough, but I’m on the mend.
Yesterday, my husband started getting sick, with a sore throat and nasal congestion. Today he has a fever of 101 with body aches. I didn’t get a fever at all.
My real question is if the same cold can present differently between people. And if he did, indeed, catch this from me, chances are I won’t catch it again from him, right?

If it is the same strain of virus you probably will not come down sick again, however…there are thousands upon thousands of viruses. Most likely it is the same strain you have had, but, impossible to say for sure.
The average incubation period for most viruses is a few days, but it is still possible he picked up another strain somewhere else. You will know soon enough I think. haha
A lot of people do not realize that the most contagious period for most viruses is when the host is still pre-symptomatic. This is why when people claim they came down sick within a day of being around a sick person, they are completely off, they were most likely exposed days before. The only exception is the intestinal flu which often does come on within about 12 hours of exposure.
I start my last semester of college next week, so I can’t wait to find out if I’ll catch this or not.
My Ex and I were at a wedding together in February. He had bronchitis. I came back and had a very bad cold. A week later my friend, who was doing some work at my house, came down with bronchitis! So yes, it can present differently in different people.
If I’m around someone with a cold or cough,I ask if it’s a cold or allergy. If it’s a cold, I take 1000 mg of Vitamin C ASAP, followed by 500 mg twice a day for the three day incubation period. I haven’t had a cold for years. Works even when it’s my spouse who has the cold and whatever the symptoms are.
There are many different strains of the cold virus. Once you get one strain, you are immune to that strain forever. That is why babies and little kids seem to have colds all the time, while older people rarely have them. I haven’t had a cold in years and years.
Your husband caught your cold. You can’t catch the same cold back. Man. Could you imagine the mess if you could? We’d never get well!
OMG. I can’t believe this! No sooner did I type that, then stood up…and started sneezing! And I feel all snotty and stuff! I was FINE before I read this Q! The twins have a cold…but maybe I’m just having an allergy thing. I just thought it was ironic.
Yes, the same virus can present differently. No, I doubt you will catch this again if you do become ill again you may need to go see your MD. Feel better soon!
No, it’s a slightly different virus, not the same virus presenting “differently,” @Emmy1234.
@Dutchess_III If it’s a different virus, why would I not catch it? I’ve developed for this strain only, no?
My comment was to @Emmy1234.
If it’s a different virus you CAN catch it @livelaughlove21. I’m saying that you came down with a cold, you passed the virus on to your husband. Now he has the cold. You can’t catch the virus back from him because you’ve already had it, and you will forever be immune to that particular virus.
If you happen to come down with another cold it will be strictly a coincidence that you caught another, different cold virus. There are a ton of them out there, but only a relatively few are “common.”
@Dutchess_III- I was simply answering her question. Yes, the same virus can present with different symptoms in individuals. And yes some of their symptoms are similar. If you appear to be recovering from it but it suddenly returns in full force you need to be evaluated by a Dr. Just maybe you didn’t get over it. Maybe she was taking meds and they helped but are no longer doing the trick!
Oh and BTW I’m a nurse. Numerous times we’ve had people present with the same bug but different symptoms!
@Dutchess_III I know you were responding to her, but I was confused as to why you corrected her by saying it is a different virus when you just said I wouldn’t catch the same cold from him. I’m still confused…
I heard “Colds are three days coming, three days staying, 3 days leaving.” That’s about right, too. I have never gone to the doctor for a cold. Never even missed work for a cold. The last time I missed work was ‘cause I was dying, literally.
@Emmy1234 How do you know it’s the same virus? How can you tell the differences between one virus and the next?
@Dutchess_III If it was not the same virus, he didn’t get it from me. The reason I wouldn’t catch the same cold again is because it’s the same cold. Or the same strain of that virus. Rhinovirus, obviously.
Right. He probably he got the cold virus from you. Ergo, you can’t get sick from that virus again. I think you’re misreading something that I’m saying.
@Dutchess_III No. You said:
“No, it’s a slightly different virus, not the same virus presenting “differently,” @Emmy1234.
It’s either the same or it’s not.
My response to @Emmy1234 was in response to her comment “Yes, the same virus can present with different symptoms in individuals” I guess I misunderstood her, and thought she was saying you can get the same virus twice, but with different symptoms. But I think she was just saying that the virus can do different things to different people, which is true.
My bad Emmy1234. I think we’re all on the same page here. Sry.
@Dutchess_III ummm I don’t know how you got that. I was saying yes her husband could have the same virus with different symptoms. Yes your not going to catch the same cold again. But what if its bacteria related like Strep….yes you can reinfect with that! It may or may not be the same virus that he got. Also there are 100’s of different types of Rhinoviruses. @livelaughlove21-bottom line if ya’ll aren’t feeling better see your doc.
I’m clear now. It was a misunderstanding.
I misunderstood your comment,that’s all.
Yes, there is a huge difference between bacteria and viruses. Too many people don’t understand that.
I don’t think a misunderstanding that you caused! Geesh
