What do you get for free?

I get childcare for free from my mom, aunt and grandma. Actually, I think I pay a great psychological cost for that. So, never mind.

I am a bad person and watch every tv show and movie on the internet for free. Sometimes I have movie shows with my friends to watch new movies before they come out in the US.

I do it with books too, but if I like the book, I go out and buy a copy after.

What do I get for free? A lot, pretty much the things you’ve listed here. Also, I got things I want in the supermarkets for free, travel for free, go to the restaurant for free… Oh I really can’t list them all!

Being under 20 years old, without a real job and financially dependent on my parents are awesome!

Free software (Adobe CS, Microsoft, Apple). It’s a perk of my job.

There was some kind of mistake made on my credit card and I have never been charged interest in the past 10 years. I have carried a balance at times, so it’s not because of that. I try to pay it off each month that I have charged on it when I can though.

I have a friend with a garage full of classic cars. He lets me take them out as they all need to be driven. So, I drive a Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes, and Rolls for free.

The grace of Brodin

For nearly 4 months of the year (summer vacation) I get to live with my parents and they pay for my needs. A portion of my education is free to me. A portion of my healthcare is free to me.

I feel lucky for these things, but I’d be lying if I claimed I didn’t feel a little bit entitled. My parents brought me into this world and they are seeing to it that I’m getting along okay. I’m planning on getting an apartment and an internship next summer, so little bird is finally gonna be able to fly away. A college education is ludicrously expensive these days, and I worked very hard in high school to qualify for merit scholarships. And particularly healthcare, I am of the belief that the ill deserve help. Sadly I’m one of them and I’m glad help is available to me.

Nothing.

My husband has been more or less supporting me financially for over a year. I’m completing my college degree at the moment, so he is the breadwinner. I do feel guilty at times.

Free Fluther account.

Quite often, I get a nice little “smile-for-no-reason” when passing people in a parking lot, or very briefly meet a thoughtful person offering to take our shopping cart back to the store as they are walking toward it.

These are “free” things which I always try to keep in mind while stepping around all of the ‘asshole’ behavior which so many in this world keep throwing at us….

I’m having trouble thinking of anything. Aside from things that nobody pays for, or at least nobody pays for directly, such as sunshine, friends, and the public library, I think I—or we, my husband and I—pay for everything I have, use, or enjoy.

I know I’m providing a lot of things to some people for free: room, board, clothing, cellphones, utilities, car insurance, cooking, and other domestic privileges, and (to others) professional services and other volunteer support.

Healthcare. No I don’t feel guilty. And I’m not going to say my alimony because I sure paid for that. @Imadethisupwithnoforethought care to say what stream/torrent service? been looking for a good one!

VA Health care, such as it is.

Jalapeños.

Last year I bought a hot pepper and didn’t eat it. It dried out. I planted the seeds this year.

Instead of throwing out food, I have a bunch of pepper plants.

Drinks occasionally. Weed cause there are always promotions at dispensaries and my boyfriend gives me what he gets for free. They are very generous. I currently also get health care and most services for free thanks to my fathers hard work and great insurance plan. That’s about it….......

Online banking from my local brick-and-mortar bank. I know it’s pretty much the norm, now, but back when I first signed up maybe four years ago, there was (apparently) supposed to be a monthly fee. I knew nothing about it until they suddenly started charging me about two years later and told me I should have been getting charged all along. I pitched a fit and told them if I’d known there was a fee I never would have used it in the first place! The bank removed the fees and agreed to let me keep the service for free. Still using it.

I have a Roku box and a TV antenna so I get TV for free.
My email service and Fluther is free.
I get free wood delivered from a tree surgeon when he takes down a tree in my area. He does not have to pay for disposal and get to heat my house.
I like getting and giving free hugs (((U)))

Not much else is free for me.
I pay for my son’s “free” phone ... Don’t get me started. .

What do I need in addition to the box itself? Is it easy to set up?

@Katniss I recommend a Netflix account (and maybe an Amazon account). As for set-up, my partner did that, no clue, but probably not an issue. It sits on top of the cable box and you click a button to switch from TV to Roku.

A lot of people in our small town get free cable because the cable company didn’t do the boxes correctly or something.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I have a Netflix account. I’m addicted to Netflix, I’m just tired of watching everything on my phone and my computer. I have an Amazon account as well. What will I need that for?
I’ll probably have my son do the setup. I’m not so great with that kind of stuff. lol

I am living at home with my parents so I am given a room, utilities, food (though I buy 98% of my own groceries), and access to wifi at no charge. My brother also shares his Netflix account with me.

This is going to change in a year when I move out. I am prepared for shell-shock.

@Katniss I love my Roku. There are hundreds of free channels of every variety. And you can add Netflix and Amazon if you have it.
It connects to your Wifi or you can wire it directly with an ethernet cable. Whatever you have. It is great. Best $50 you will spend on TV. I bought mine 2–3 years ago.

@LuckyGuy Even the sports channels? And how does it work in a rural area. The cable company won’t run it on my road because of too few users.

@LuckyGuy Can you get NHL Center Ice on it?
I’m moving out of Red Wings territory soon and I’m very concerned about being able to watch my team.

@Adirondackwannabe You need broadband if you are going to get the hundreds of channels. You have a fast connection right? How are you getting your internet now?

@Katniss I don’t know. I am not a sports guy and don’t enjoy sitting and watching it. . I will go there now and look at the sports channels that are available.

Dish TV. Originally couldn’t get anything but dialup. I don’t know if that’s changed.

There are 54 sports channels. OK. I ran through the sports channels (the first time I ever looked there!). I saw MLB.TV, CBS Sports.com, UFC.TV, ESPN radio, SEC Digital Nerwork, NHL Game Center. (may have additional fee) , SailTV, FASTHockey, Sport Fishing, My.Combat…. Basketball, Tennis, Golf…..too many. I did not see NHL Center Ice. I recommend you go to a Best Buy store and look at their TVs to see what your Roku will do.
Obviously I did not bother to add them to my list as I already have about 40: NASA TV, NetFlix, Amazon, Vimeo, Pub-D-Hub, Pandora, Weather Underground, TED, Chow, Crunchy Roll, WSJ Wall Street Journal, UHF Urban Hacker Files, Tasty Trade, CNBC News, APOA, CNN, Comedy Time, NowhereTV…. Sorry, no porn
Plus I get about 10 network channels from my antenna.

You can tell a lot about a person by looking at their Roku channels.

I only take free channels. The Netflix and Amazon are trades with a friend.

@Adirondackwannabe What is your download speed? Mine is 3–4 MBPS. I consider that just fast enough. I don’t have a big HD TV.

Free healthcare for me and one dependent. I still pay copays but my employer pays 100% of the policy premiums – which is actually a huge perk here in the US. I was able to max my 401k contribution thanks to this.
