Which apartment in the Dakota was John Lennon's?

Asked by josie (30934points) August 20th, 2013

My dad loved the Beatles, and I vaguely remember him being pretty down when John Lennon got killed.
As a sort of tribute to both men, whenever I go to New York, I take the subway up to 72nd street and walk past the place where John Lennon got shot.
I went there again last month, and I wondered which windows might be the ones he looked out of.
Does anybody know?

I only know that they lived in a couple of apartments near the top (7th) floor, and I think owned two or three others for storage and/or privacy. I always imagined their view to be looking down on Central Park to the east, but that’s just a guess….

Interesting side note: Only a few days ago, I happened to watch an interview on YouTube with James Taylor, who as you may know was first signed by Apple Records in its infancy. Taylor lived at the Dakota in 1980 and said while speaking on the phone to his agent in California, she said “Everything is getting so crazy out here on the West Coast.” Taylor replied, “You think it’s crazy there ?.....Right now, the cops are shooting at somebody down in the street.”

Only it wasn’t the cops…...and it wasn’t just “somebody”....

I don’t think it is public knowledge which apartments are owned by Yoko Ono, just that they purchased “several” of them. From this photo she posted on Twitter, they are clearly on the upper floors and look out across the park.
