Can someone help me find a bus?

My best friend is coming from North Epping, New Hampshire to where I live in upstate NY. We tried the Amtrak but they charge one fee for the trip here and a different, much higher fee to go back. The Megabus doesn’t go that far, and Greyhound has been completely useless in helping her. It’s a three hour drive from where she lives to where I live, but the Amtrak only has 12 hour and 8 hour trips.
Can anyone help me find a way to get her here that won’t break the bank?

You need to give us her end destination. Upstate NY is a large area. Are you trying to get her to Albany?
Does this help to get you started? (I haven’t looked up North Epping yet.)
E of Manchester.
Cool site.
The problem with NH is those damn mountains. It’s really hard to go from east to west.
@gailcalled I’m in Clifton Park, NY. but its easier to get her to Albany and then taxi to my place because we don’t get buses here _
@CWOTUS kind of, but it doesn’t help get her to NY. though she will probably need to take a bus to get to the station anyway. thank you :)
Did you try Trailways? They run in that area.
@gailcalled thanks! the only issue with something like that though is getting the buses to synch up right for time
I know. It seems really challenging. Can your friend rent a car and drive?
@gailcalled yeah, you got that right. She’s 19. She can’t rent a car, unfortunately.
Okay, Albany. That information had been missing when you first posted and I first responded.
As you can see from the first response I posted, there are ways to get out of North Epping to other towns in NH (such as Manchester), and then bus routes from there to Boston, Worcester or Springfield.
From any one of those cities, I think, you can take Peter Pan to Albany. (I’m sure that other bus lines also serve between those cities, but PP had the best layout and most easily searchable web site, so that’s where I stopped. The Trailways information for New York is particularly awful. It’s like nothing exists outside of the state line except a couple of places in Quebec.)
@CWOTUS she knows the area better, so I’ll send it to her, thanks ^^ yeah, I just wrote “upstate NY” so I guess that’s vague ^^”
yeah, Trailways isn’t the greatest. and Greyhound is what I normally do, but their site won’t work on a laptop for some reason anymore, and both times they were called (once by her and once by me) the people we talked to barely spoke English. not that I have a problem with that, it was just a slight communication barrier
What about the train? Is that out of the question?
How far away is she from Plattsburgh, NY. in some parts of that region VT. NH. and NY are just kind of across the river from each other. At least that was true when I worked summers in Grantham, NH. Both VT and NY were a short ride across the bridge.
I went to college in Plattsburgh and we took D&H Railroad to Albany and then on to Manhattan.
I think the initials stand for Delaware and Hudson ? (We jokingly referred to it as Die&Heave :)
Can you then rent the car and pick her up in Worcester? From Clifton Park to Worcester by car isn’t a bad haul.
@Buttonstc the train is expensive and it’s a 12 hour trip by train, where it’s 6 hours by bus, and 3 by car. It’s possible she does. I haven’t really looked at a good map yet to find out
@gailcalled I just got into a car accident with my aunt’s car, so my parents are very limiting on what I can do (I’m 22 but I live at home, so their house means their rules) so I can’t. I’m low on funds because my money goes to the car and stuff.
It can’t possibly be 12 hrs. from P’burgh to Albany. Basically 4 and its not like they stop every 5 mins. or something.
It was only 10 hrs all the way to NYC and another 2 out to Long Island.
But I just threw it out there as another possibility. If it doesn’t work out for you I hope you find something that does.
I only chimed in because I have a bit of familiarity with the North Country (as we used to call it) but its been a while ago.
The trip from the Amtrak goes (not kidding here) to south station (Mass), to Back Bay (Mass, nine minutes from the previous stop), then to Penn station in NYC, then to Albany. I have no idea why they do that, but they do. shrug
I appreciate the suggestion. she’s a preferred customer or something like that so she gets five bucks off, but they want 51 to get to Albany and 110 to get back to NH. not worth it, really.
Oh you do? awesome :D
I wasn’t talking about Amtrak. This was a straight shot from NYC thru Albany to P’burgh.
Although considering that the AF base is no longer operational I wonder if that train is still going. It’s been a while. My college days are far far behind me :)
@Buttonstc; check your geography. The North Country (still called that) is way way too north. Epping, NH is near Manchester, NH, which is a straight shoot due east of Albany, which is what.. well south of Plattsburgh.
I just checked the Wiki and the D&H is no more. It was the chief connector between NYC and Montreal, Canada.
RIP good ol’ Die and Heave.
@Buttonstc sorry, I was referring to the 12 hours thing. I tried changing it to Saratoga Springs and it gave me the same thing, and that’s closer to where I live. A few of the Amtrak/bus lines are gone. I JUST found out we have a stop for the Greyhound in my town, and I’ve lived here 22 years. lol poor Die and Heave
@gailcalled
You’re right; obviously i didnt check the geography for her. I was going off my memories if yhe area. And we were literally a short ride from the Canadian border.
Which is why I purposely said “in some parts” the 3 three states are separated by little more than a lake (Champlain) or a bridge.
Obviously not in ALL parts :)
@gailcalled yeah, it IS a straight shot over. which is why I don’t understand that 12 hour nonsense. If I had a car, I could drive to her house myself, pick her up, and be back here before the train even got out of Mass.
Is renting a car out of the question? Are you guys minors who can’t drive? If so, see if your friends parents are willing to drive half way and your parents drive the other half and meet them in the middle, so it isn’t a long round trip for either.
If you can drive or your friend can drive. Rent a car for one day and drop it off there and then rent it for the return trip back.
@Pandora I’m 22 and she’s 19 so neither of us can rent a car. (Well I might be able to, but they charge more if you’re under 25 in New York state and most places won’t rent to people under that age, I found) She is estranged from her parents, and my aunt is taking our only car to go on her vacation on Monday, the same day my friend is coming. I got into an accident recently so we don’t have the second car at my house anymore.
Have you considered using the ride board at a local college?
Good idea; Here’s the list‘s_Capital_District
Things may be slow at this time of year but who knows?
This trip for your friend sounds really complicated. I had forgotten about the accident and the parental furor.
I still like Peter Pan bus from Manchester to Worcester and Amtrak to Albany..Ren. best.
@luckyguy you have to be a college student to use it
Still, the equivalent service exists in Craigslist. And not everyone on Craigslist is an ax murderer.
