Does anyone know of a good free virus removal tool?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) August 20th, 2013

I picked up the ‘delta toolbar’ which I have removed. I am on windows 8. But I notice my browser is flicking back up to ‘top’ whilst I am on a page.

Does anyone know of a good free antivirus?

There’s also Avast. I use the Android version on my tablet. It’s also a good idea to have an anti-malware program since this isn;t always included with an anti-virus package. Malwarebytes appears to be the top one in this category.

Malwarebytes all the way. One of the best in existence.

Avast is also good. Both are free and remember these are very good removal tools, you might like something else for preventative virus management.

By the way, if you have a rootkit infection, then just unplug your internet cable (and turn off wi-fi), and just start backing up your files now because you might as well rip and reinstall Windows entirely.

@gambitking Thank you do you have a reliable link to Malwarebytes? I think I got this from downloading Gimp.

@LornaLove :: This is such a huge problem. My mom seems to be bitten every few months when she downloads software. 90% of the time the top link on google is versions that fuck your computer. She has also gotten bad versions of Gimp I had to clean up. I wish google would fix this problem. They have the resources to do it.

I downloaded the Malwarebytes and it seemed to have done the trick :)

Thanks everyone.

Avast and AVG Free Antivirus are best in performance, easy to use and reliable. But if you don’t want to go for 3rd party software then you can check out the Microsoft security essentials which is a free antivirus utility.
