How to get rid of a forest of mushrooms that have appeared on my lawn?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33577points) August 21st, 2013

A couple of weeks ago, I had 2–3 mushrooms pop up. With all of the rain here in Georgia, today something near 40–50 mushrooms began to pop up, in (roughly) a 6-foot circle.

I have no idea what sort of mushroom it is, and I’m not sure I care. I have no intention of eating it.

How can I stop this abundance of mushroom growth?

I would have great fun kicking them all away then just use rubber gloves to bin them (in case they’re poisonous)!

It is just a result of all the rain, and is only temporary. Just pull them out by hand and wait for Mom Nature to stop screwing around with you…

Ignore them unless you are looking for some stretching exercises The next time you mow the lawn, they will be pulverized.

You have been blessed with a “fairy ring”. Enjoy! It will be gone the next time you mow.

Yes, don’t fight nature….mushrooms are cool, they will run their life span pretty quickly. Let them be.

If they are in a ring, count yourself lucky. As @LuckyGuy notes, that’s called a fairy ring. Back in the days when people believed in witchcraft, it was believed that fairies dancing in a circle at night caused them. Actually, the explanation is boringly mundane. They begin in a single spot, and the mycelia branch out from there, staying underground and only send up fruiting bodies when conditions and nutrients in the soil are perfect. The effort of producing the fruiting bodies will deplete the soil they are in of nutrients, so the next time they fruit, the circle is a little larger in diameter, growing where the soil is still rich with the nutrients the fungi need.

I would leave them untouched, as having a fairy ring in your yard is unique.
