Best song ever: Hallelujah?

Asked by skfinkel (13537points) August 22nd, 2013

Not sure what started it, but tonight I have been listening to every version I can of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. What a great song.
Do you have a better song? Or as good as?

I absolutely love Halleluja. Which version is your favourite, @skfinkel ? I think mine is Jeff Buckley’s.

It’s a great song with a beautiful melody. I’d love to hear Josh Groban and Jeff Beck collaborate on a cover.

My favorite version so far is KD Lang’s.

Love this song, in nearly any version. I just stumbled on to this one, done by a 15 year old kid. Might just be my new favorite version!

Another ‘best song ever’ contender for me is John Lennon’s Imagine.

As long as it isn’t Leonard Cohen himself singing it :)

I heard that once and it traumatized me for life :) Never again. Fabulous songwriter, lousy singer.

But it’s a great song. It just sticks in your brain. A similar song like that for me is “Bird on a Wire”. Johnny Cash did a wonderful cover of it. Check it out on YT.

@skfinkel

I know exactly what you mean. I got on a similar jag with this song a few years ago and spent hours on YouTube tracking down every version I could find.

The one I liked best was on the soundtrack recording for Shrek. I thought it was Jeff Buckley but it turned out to be Rufus Wainwright.

@downtide : Love Jeff Buckley’s verson
@Brian1946: Thank you for the KD Lang reference. Just heard it and it is fabulous.
@augustlan : The 15 year old was one of the ones I listened to last night—it was great.
@Buttonstc Rufus Wainwright—also wonderful. I happen to love Leonard Cohen’s version—there’s something about his singing the words he wrote that is almost holy.
@Incoherency_ Alexandra Burke’s version—also fine.

This song is one of those things that is so inspired, every version tells us of the soul of the singer. The song itself is joy.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies – That is my favorite song, as well.

Great song, yes. But it depresses me.

@Incoherency_ That version was fantastic. Gave me chills.

downtide's avatar

@longgone it’s certainly a very emotional song. I used to sing it at my local folk club and it made me cry every single time.

@downtide Exactly. I can hardly ever listen to it.
