How much is too much of honey roasted cashews ?

Asked by Aster (20028points) August 23rd, 2013

This snack is my latest addiction. In 2008 it was Hershey’s with almonds, a month ago it was pistachio nuts and now it’s honey roasted cashews. For a sedentary person, how many can I eat per day without gaining weight? And no; they are Not going in the trash!

See this chart: http://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/generic/cashew-nuts-honey-roasted

There are a fair number of carbs and calories, and cashews (like all nuts) have a comparatively large amount of fat.

Any more than an ounce per day begins to add up. On the other hand, you may have a great metabolism and you may work out strenuously, so the calories may be put to immediate use.

Everyone is different.

I’m kind of like an alcoholic on those things sometimes:

One is too many, and a bucketful is not enough.

Things like that go too far because of the “honey roasting” which adds sugar to an already tasty thing. Pistachio nuts are much better, I’ve been eating a lot of roasted but unsalted pistachios for a while now, because the oil is a heathy fat and without the salt I don’t have to worry about sodium.

1 cup appears to be about 750 calories. How many calories are you eating on average per day? The math will give you your answer. If you eat nothing else today, you could eat two cups without gaining weight…probably not a good idea for the long haul, however.

It’s the sugar/salt/fat combo. It’s a happy drug that goes straight to your brain. If you are getting fat, try and find happiness another way.

Figure out the calories. Determine how many calroies you eat per day and maintain your weight, and then estiate your caloric intake daily so you stay on target.

I would suggest that you try raw unsalted cashews. They are amazing. Sweet, crunchy, filling. Much healthier. Even one honey roasted cashew is too many – if your concern is nutrient density, and health.

I will say that one day on a long drive I ate half a bag of chili lime cashews. Holy smokes, they were ridiculously good and addictive. The combo of fat, salt, sugar, heat was to die for. And I nearly did. Bloated and felt poisoned for about a day after. But worth every minute of it…

@GoldieAV16 No; I just like the kind I have. I don’t believe one is too many. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say two aren’t too many.

All things in moderation. Sure you can have a few, but I would mentally think of them more like a dessert than a snack. You could also go for a walk around the neighborhood and enjoy a couple more.

Pistachios and Cashews are a dangerous thing to have in the house. I’ll make myself sick on them pretty much every time.

Aster's avatar

@majorrich Nothing makes me sick. I am “unsickable.” haha With the exception of deep sea fishing where I almost died or wanted to and I will not do it again!

They sure are tasty. I don’t blame you.

Speaking ONLY for myself…

I would not be eating too many roasted cashews. Too much omega 6 (10 grams in a cup of nuts, which when you look at it is not that much) that has been oxidized by heat, making it pro inflammatory and contributing to obesity, insulin resistance, heart disease, excess cortisol, etc

If you must have cashews, eat them occasionally, and eat them raw.

These are high calories. One day appropriate to eat some, not too much

Life is short, eat the damn honey roasted cashews with gusto! lol
We all have to die of SOMETHING, better cashews than cocaine, crank or cognac. lol

Aster's avatar

I dunno, @Coloma , I bet the cognac would be much better for me. lol Not that I’ve ever tasted any.

@Aster Haha…well pick your poison. The calories of the Cashews or the loss of brain cells from the booze. Hey…it’s a poem! lol
