How can I see if this patent is in use?

Asked by Obscurethinktank (135points) August 24th, 2013

I have an idea for an assault rifle that uses an air shock design that helps with the kick. I’m not going to explain much about the design, all I want to know is if there’s a website I could go to, to search if my design is already patented/ in use. It’s really important. I need to know if there’s a website that I can go to that helps me search the U.S patents for my design.

You most likely know this, but the gas flowback that ejects the spent cartridge and chambers the next round is energy moving in direct opposition to the recoil.

If you are way past that, I would strongly advise against looking for a free website and uploading your idea there, Bite the bullet (pun intended) and hire a respected patent search attorney to ensure that your idea is unique. If you aren’t up to calculating the physics involved, you might also want to get a technical expert to do a feasibility study. If you are right, the profits will make those front-end costs look like chump change. It there’s a fatal flaw in your thinking, hiring the counselors will cost you far less than going into production on a product that doesn’t work, or that violates someone else’s patent.

Talk about absorbing kick, watch this amazing video showing how much of a 44 magnum recoil is diminished by the system that ejects the spent shell casing, chambers the next round, and rotates the cylinder. With the full recoil of a 44 magnum and no gas used to reload, there is no earthly way that guy who looks to be my age would have brought the gun back down after each shot and cranked out 6 shots on target in 1 second.
