Can the death of someone you love make you schizophrenic?

Asked by lovelessness (659points) August 26th, 2013

If the very beloved girlfriend of a guy dies, could he become schizophrenic and possibly see his ex-dead-girlfriend’s face morphed into his new girlfriend’s face?

It sounds a bit logical to me, but if anyone out there is an expert or know some about the topic, please answer away!

If he is pre-disposed for it sure, but if he is not I doubt it..

He was probably on the way to being schizhrenic already, that event just pushed him from “odd” to “diagnosable”

He probably was already predisposed to schizophrenia and this oushed him over the edge. My grandfather and one of his brothers were schizophrenic and he had a sister who was institutionalized her entire adult life, I assume she was also, but I am not sure of her diagnosis. Their childhood was very difficult and thn in their teens they came to America without their parents, not knowing the language, and worked difficult factory jobs. None of the next generation or the generations after that are schizophrenic, so I believe environment and events definitely have an effect.

There is a lot more to Schizophrenia than just seeing a dead ex-girlfriends face in the new girlfriend. That could be many things, including PTSD for example. Has he been diagnosed as Schizophrenic?

It seems like a bit of a leap to me.

yeh, it could be anything from PTSD to Bipolar Disorder. Some forms of Bipolar include psychotic symptoms such as hallucinating. Schizophrenia? Maybe…but as someone else said, he’d have to be pre-disposed. the death of his girlfriend would not CAUSE it.

It could be lack of sleep, anxiety, depression, or a dream or any combination of them. If it is one instance it means nothing in my opinion.
