How long have scientist been growing "mini brains"?

Asked by LDRSHIP (1800points) August 30th, 2013

I stumbled upon an interesting read on my Facebook page on a page I follow.

Has this been happening or only recently?

What can we do with it or learn from it in future?

How about a link?

Actually it is the republican party that has been growing min-brains for decades. Don’t you follow politics?

Seriously, this sort of work has been thought about for quite a long time, but they didn’t have the tools (technology) or the understanding until relatively recently. Stem cell research has made it possible to ‘grow’ brains as they are doing now – and stem cell work is relatively recent. (You may remember that George Bush but the kibosh on most stem cell work when he was president, and that Obama allowed the scientific work to continue.

This is an area where research is very promising – but it is very slow.

@elbanditoroso heh, slow learners?

Seriously, I’d like to see this link…

@snowberry That is the link.

This the FB page https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151826223254446&set=a.10150096360929446.283779.667324445&type=1&theater It also has links to same articles pretty much. Slight differences.

And here is a youtube video of it.

This is more common than you think

It is hard to imagine a lab grown brain being helpful to scientists in any meaningful way, and is certainly a slippery slope of “can do it” vs. “should do it”.
