When figuring out calories for a homemade meal, how would you count the following situation?

Asked by Seaofclouds (23108points) August 31st, 2013

I recently started watching my daily intake to make sure I’m not over eating. Most things have been straight forward, but I ran into something different this morning.

Making french toast, we coat the bread in an egg and milk mixture before placing on the skillet. How woud you determine the amount off mixture that ended up on each slice of bread? I simply divided the amount we had in the bowl by the number of slices of bread used. I’m interested to see if others have different ideas about how to handle this type of thing.

Thanks everyone.

Assuming you used up all of the egg-milk mixture, your method seems sound.

I usually just guesstimate (and overestimate) it, but your method seems perfectly fine and accurate.

It’s tough to manage it that closely. I watch my waistline and adjust accordingly.

If you need to be really accurate you can weigh the bread before and after dipping in the egg mixture. But that seems to be FAR too much hassle to me.

Thanks everyone. I don’t have to be super stringent about it. I just want this to be a lifestyle change and not just something I do for a while. So with that in mind, I’m trying to be as accurate as I can so I can reprogram my way of thinking about food. Thanks again!

I would do what you did. Count up all calories and then divide by the number of french toast slices I ended up with. Don’t forget to count the oil or butter you used in the pan, assuming you used some.
